On Tuesday, Washington released its first unofficial depth chart, and Jayden Daniels is listed as the starting quarterback for the Commanders ahead of their preseason game this weekend at the New York Jets.

“He’s earned that right to do that,” coach Dan Quinn said. “I had high expectations for him coming in, but he’s definitely exceeded even my expectations. He has a way about him that makes other players gravitate toward him. They see how hard he’s worked.”

Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury pointed to Daniels’ hard work and preparation as the reason for his strong performance in camp.

“He works really hard,” Kingsbury said. “He must study all night because he comes into our early morning meetings and has everything down. He’s putting in the work, there’s no doubt. I’m not sure what his process is, but he gets it.”

Daniels, who won the Heisman Trophy last year at LSU, is ahead of veteran free agent Marcus Mariota on the depth chart.

Mariota, also a No. 2 pick in the 2015 draft, last played for the Eagles before joining Washington in March. According to Quinn, Mariota has provided strong competition for Daniels throughout training camp.

“Marcus has had a really good camp, too,” Quinn said. “This wasn’t easy. That’s what competition is about, and Marcus is a great teammate for Jayden.”

Quinn confirmed that Daniels will play against the Jets but did not say how much.

“I just love playing football, so I’m happy about it,” Daniels said. “I always knew I was going to play. I don’t know when, but I’m excited to have the opportunity to get out there.”
