A legendary quarterback with three Super Bowl victories and a future Hall of Famer with two NFL MVP awards are in a legal dispute over a specific number: eight.

According to Michael Rothstein, Troy Aikman and Lamar Jackson are battling copyright issues related to the number they both wore during their football careers — 8. Both athletes claim legal rights to some form of the number.

Most recently, Jackson opposed Aikman’s use of “EIGHT” on clothing and bags, arguing it could confuse or mislead consumers into thinking they are purchasing products endorsed by Jackson instead of Aikman.

Jackson’s legal filing emphasized his extensive efforts to promote and popularize the number 8, which is closely associated with his fame and personality, and used in his trademarks and media coverage.

Aikman owns a beer brand named “EIGHT,” while Jackson sells “Era 8” apparel. Jackson submitted his paperwork on July 9, and Aikman is expected to respond by August 18.

Depending on the outcome, it could create an awkward situation when the Ravens play on Monday Night Football (where Aikman works as an analyst) on October 21, and again on November 25.
