Mike Tomlin did not reach out to Sean Payton regarding Russell Wilson

Today, quarterback Russell Wilson will play his first preseason game with the Steelers. This follows the Broncos releasing Wilson and the Steelers signing him to a one-year, $1.21 million contract.

In a recent interview about Pittsburgh’s quarterback situation, ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio asked coach Mike Tomlin if he had contacted Broncos coach Sean Payton to learn more about Wilson’s current abilities.

“I did not,” Tomlin replied. “It’s our job to figure that out. We don’t avoid responsibilities. We gather information, do our research, and make decisions without seeking comfort from others outside the Steelers. That’s how we operate.”

While Tomlin’s stance seems firm, it’s a broad approach. When scouting new players, the Steelers often talk to people outside the organization.

Regarding Wilson, why not at least reach out to Payton? Though the teams are rivals, coaches often share information in the broader coaching community. For instance, Payton might need details about a former Steeler in the future.

Even if Tomlin might doubt Payton’s views on Wilson, given Payton’s possible bias, talking to him could have provided useful facts for Tomlin’s decision-making.

If Tomlin and the Steelers aren’t making these calls, they might miss important information that could help them avoid mistakes.
