The Minnesota Vikings secured some depth at the tight end position by reaching a new contract agreement with Johnny Mundt on Friday. This move comes as T.J. Hockenson is still recovering from reconstructive knee surgery.
Mundt, who was poised to hit unrestricted free agency next week, has been with the Vikings for the past two seasons after spending five years with the Los Angeles Rams. He played in all 17 games last season, recording a career-high 172 receiving yards on 17 catches.
Earlier this week, the Vikings also re-signed tight end Nick Muse, who was set to become an exclusive rights free agent. Additionally, Josh Oliver remains under contract. Oliver served as the blocking-oriented No. 2 tight end behind Hockenson, who suffered a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee during Minnesota’s loss to Detroit on Dec. 24.
Hockenson underwent surgery on Jan. 29 and is expected to miss the beginning of the regular season.
