A couple of years ago, wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown made the bold move to request a trade after completing his third season with the Ravens. Having achieved his first-ever 1,000-yard season in 2021, tallying 1,008 yards on 91 receptions with six touchdowns, Brown sought a fresh start elsewhere.
Baltimore honored Brown’s request, facilitating his move to Arizona in exchange for a first-round pick. Initially, Brown cited his departure from the Ravens as a result of feeling incompatible with the team’s offensive system.
However, Brown’s performance with the Cardinals didn’t quite soar to new heights. Hindered by injuries and inconsistent quarterback play, he recorded 67 receptions for 709 yards and three touchdowns in 12 games during his inaugural season in the desert. Subsequently, in 2023, he managed 51 catches for a career-low 574 yards and four TDs across 14 games.
Despite the challenges, during his introductory video conference with the Chiefs on Monday, Brown reaffirmed his belief that leaving Baltimore was the right decision.
“Yes, I feel like that was the best decision for me,” Brown expressed. “At the end of the day, if you’re not happy with yourself or you’re not happy with what’s going on, you can’t put your best foot forward on the field. So, I feel like my time in Arizona, I mean, I didn’t accomplish stuff I wanted to accomplish on the field.
But as a man, I grew — I grew closer with God, I grew closer in my relationship with my family. And I feel like God put me in that situation because I needed it.” Now, having signed a one-year deal with Kansas City, Brown is eager to showcase his full potential on the field in 2024.
“Being in this system, I feel like I’ll be able to showcase my skill set,” Brown remarked. “I still feel like there’s a lot of my game that I haven’t gotten to show people. And that’s probably what I’m excited about the most being here, is to just put my best foot forward and show what I can do.”
Throughout his five seasons in the league, Brown has amassed 313 receptions for 3,644 yards and 28 touchdowns.
