Texans’ Azeez Al-Shaair describes being in a “really dark place” following his suspension for the hit on Lawrence

Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair shared that he was in a “really dark place” and questioned whether he would ever play football again after being suspended for three games due to his hit on Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence, which caused a concussion.

Speaking to reporters for the first time since his suspension, Al-Shaair opened up about his feelings during the time away from the game.

“When somebody says they’re in a dark place, as dark as you can go is where I was truthfully,” he said.

Al-Shaair mentioned that it was difficult to imagine playing football again before meeting with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and league executives Troy Vincent and Jon Runyan.

The hit on Lawrence caused the quarterback to clench both fists in a reaction that is often seen after a brain injury. Lawrence was down for several minutes as his teammates rushed to his side, leading to a brawl. While Al-Shaair was leaving the field after being ejected, fans began yelling at him, and a further altercation occurred with Jaguars guard Brandon Scherff.

Texans teammate Will Anderson tried to escort Al-Shaair off the field when a fan threw a water bottle, hitting Anderson in the helmet.

Al-Shaair understood the suspension but disagreed with how Runyan described him in the letter informing him of the punishment. The letter mentioned Al-Shaair’s “lack of sportsmanship and respect for the game of football,” which he found troubling.

“I really had a moment of, there’s no way I can go out and play football again if this is how people that I work with view me,” Al-Shaair said.

He said Runyan clarified that he was referring only to the hit and the subsequent brawl and not to his entire career. Al-Shaair admitted that he made a mistake by taking off his helmet and starting another fight, but he insisted that he never intended to hurt Lawrence.

Trevor Lawrence throws a pass in the 1st half

After his suspension, Al-Shaair spent about five days without doing much. He described the experience as “a blur,” where he didn’t eat or go anywhere.

However, messages of encouragement from children at a foster care organization in Tennessee, which he had met during his time with the Titans, helped him get out of his slump.

“I can just keep sitting here sad and sulking, or I can just do what I always do, which is just try to be positive and spread positivity,” Al-Shaair said.

He flew to Nashville to attend a foster care event he had previously attended, and the positive reception from people there helped him feel better.

“When you see people that were happy to see me, it kind of snapped me back,” he said. “Regardless of what’s being said, you know who you are and just lean into that.”

Now, as the Texans prepare for their game against the Titans on Sunday, Al-Shaair is ready to return to the field for the first time since the hit on Lawrence. Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans is excited to have him back, as the team has struggled with injuries and two consecutive losses heading into the playoffs.

“We’ve missed him over these past three weeks, just missed his presence, his leadership, missed his playmaking ability on the field,” Ryans said. “So, we’re excited to get him back out there and let him knock some of the rust off.”

Pacers brace for challenging zone defense in Miami

Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle expects to face a lot of zone defense when his team visits Miami to play the Heat on Thursday night.

Carlisle said the Pacers were “abysmal” in the final quarter-and-a-half against Milwaukee’s zone defense in their 120-112 loss on Tuesday. The Pacers had a 19-point lead in the third quarter before falling apart, which gave the Heat a good idea of how to beat Indiana.

“Games aren’t 30 minutes long,” Carlisle said. “The last 18 (minutes) were abysmal. We all own it. We lost our aggression, we lost everything that got us a pretty significant lead, and gave them a great opportunity, not only to get back in the game, but to win the game. We’re going to have to learn some hard lessons from this and get ready to bounce back.

“Miami plays more zone than anybody in the league, so I’m sure that will get their attention as well.”

Bennedict Mathurin led Indiana with 25 points, while Pascal Siakam added 20.

The Pacers struggled to get stops as the game went on, which allowed the Bucks to set up their defense. After making 11 of 27 three-pointers in the first three quarters, Indiana shot just 2 of 10 in the fourth.

“We settled for outside shots,” Carlisle said. “We didn’t attack it (Milwaukee’s zone) well, obviously. We weren’t defending well, either. Poor defense allows teams to score and get into zones, so it was the double-whammy.”

Indiana and Miami split their two games in Indianapolis earlier this season, both in November.

Miami Heat and Orlando Magic

Miami’s defense was solid, and their offense ran smoothly in a 119-108 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday, starting a three-game homestand for the Heat.

Jimmy Butler, who had been part of trade rumors recently, returned after missing five games due to a stomach illness. He played 24 minutes in his usual starting role and scored nine points.

Tyler Herro led the Heat with 32 points.

“He is continuing to gain confidence offensively,” said Heat coach Erik Spoelstra. “He has (the) responsibility to make a lot of plays for us offensively. He does it in a lot of different ways. Sometimes he’s facilitating and playing off the ball, letting other guys create. Then the ball will find him. But one way or another, we want him to put his imprint on things offensively.”

Bam Adebayo nearly had his second triple-double of the season, finishing with 23 points, 10 assists, and 9 rebounds.

The Heat had excellent ball movement, recording 34 assists on 44 made shots, with Adebayo leading the way.

“You certainly want to build some kind of offensive continuity where everybody feels like they’re involved, everybody feels like they’re who they want to be and they feel like they can impact the game offensively,” Spoelstra said.

“You have to share the ball and do little things — screen assists, sometimes it’s the pass that actually doesn’t count as an assist. Then of course the ball has to go in.

“That makes a lot of things look better.”

The Lightning are hopeful Jake Guentzel will return for their game against the Sharks in Tampa

The Tampa Bay Lightning left on Wednesday for a three-game road trip in California, but it’s still unclear if they’ll have their top offseason acquisition available.

After a solid first half, the Lightning will face the San Jose Sharks on Thursday to complete their season series, with rookie star Macklin Celebrini also in the mix as part of the Western swing.

However, Jake Guentzel’s status remains uncertain.

In the offseason, the Lightning faced a tough choice: re-sign aging captain Steven Stamkos or find a new scoring option. They said goodbye to Stamkos, trading with the Carolina Hurricanes for the 30-year-old Guentzel before free agency began. Tampa Bay then signed him to a seven-year, $63 million contract to fill the void left by Stamkos.

After a slow start on a line with Brayden Point and Nikita Kucherov, Guentzel has turned things around with 20 goals and 17 assists in 33 games. But, during a 6-2 win over the New York Rangers on Saturday, he took a hard hit into the boards and did not return. He was also scratched for the game against the Montreal Canadiens on Sunday.

“There’s been improvements since a couple games ago, so hopefully that continues and see what happens,” coach Jon Cooper said at practice on Tuesday.

Guentzel practiced in a non-contact jersey but skated with the top line. If he can’t play Thursday, Cam Atkinson would likely take his spot. Atkinson, a 13-year NHL veteran who played for the Columbus Blue Jackets and Philadelphia Flyers, has three goals and two assists in 21 games for Tampa Bay.

San Jose Sharks and Los Angeles Kings

On Dec. 5, the Lightning beat San Jose 8-1, with a five-goal first period. Point finished with four assists in that game.

The Sharks, on the other hand, have had a rough December. After a dreadful 0-7-2 start to the season, they showed some improvement but then went 2-10-1 in December. They are currently on an eight-game losing streak (0-7-1), with a 4-0 loss to the Flyers on New Year’s Eve.

Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky was frustrated after the loss, saying there was “no desperation” from his team. He noted that other teams are now figuring out their identity, and San Jose needs to match that intensity.

“It’s very disappointing. No desperation,” Warsofsky said. “And now you’re seeing teams find their identity in this league. Earlier on, I think we were probably catching teams by surprise. Now teams, this is full go.”

The Sharks are in last place with a .350 point percentage, ahead of only the struggling Blackhawks (.342). San Jose has played a league-high 40 games in the Western Conference but has earned fewer points than all but Chicago.

Despite playing fewer games, Celebrini leads all rookies with 12 goals, tied with Matvei Michkov of Philadelphia.

San Jose is missing forward William Eklund (seven goals, 20 assists), who was placed on injured reserve before the Philadelphia game. They called up 22-year-old Collin Graf from the AHL San Jose Barracuda, though he did not play against the Flyers.

Canucks aim to bounce back from historic collapse against the Kraken in Seattle

With captain Jordan Eberle out after pelvis surgery and the Seattle Kraken on a five-game losing streak before the NHL’s Christmas break, the team needed someone to step up if they wanted to avoid missing the playoffs for the third time in four years.

Jaden Schwartz answered the call.

Coach Dan Bylsma described Schwartz as a “man possessed” after the center helped the Kraken pull off a historic comeback against Vancouver last weekend. The two Pacific Division teams are set to face off again Thursday in Seattle.

“Schwartz has been front and center with some of the messaging on how we want to play and what we’re trying to do,” Bylsma said. “(Schwartz) is a gamer. He rises when the game’s on the line, when it’s an important game.”

On Saturday, Schwartz scored two goals as the Kraken became just the third team in NHL history to overcome a three-goal deficit in the final five minutes of regulation to win. Defenseman Vince Dunn also scored late and netted the game-winning goal on a breakaway in overtime, marking the Kraken’s fifth comeback from a multi-goal deficit this season.

Schwartz and Dunn were teammates on the 2019 Stanley Cup-winning St. Louis Blues. “So many people could take after him and learn from him,” Dunn said of Schwartz.

While the Kraken celebrated their comeback, the Canucks were left feeling frustrated.

“Honestly, it’s pretty devastating,” Vancouver forward Jake DeBrusk said. “We should never be losing that game, let alone letting it get to overtime. But it just goes to show, there’s a couple bad bounces and a resilient team over there.

You’ve got to give them credit, but it just reinforces the focus we have to have no matter what the score is… Anytime that we have a two-goal lead there late, that’s got to be automatic.”

Vancouver Canucks and Columbus Blue Jackets

The Canucks were without defenseman Quinn Hughes and center Elias Pettersson due to undisclosed injuries. Coach Rick Tocchet confirmed that neither would be traveling to Seattle.

Both teams have played once since that comeback game.

The Canucks lost 3-1 to the Calgary Flames on Tuesday, despite Brock Boeser scoring his sixth goal in the past four games. Kevin Lankinen made 26 saves for Vancouver, which has now lost five of its last six games (1-2-3).

“I’m just coming to the rink every day and trying to work as hard as I can,” said Boeser, whose 14 goals rank second on the team behind Jake DeBrusk’s 16. “I wish I’d be scoring and winning hockey games right now. I’m going to keep doing what I’ve been doing and try to help contribute to our team (winning).”

Tocchet was more pleased with his team’s effort despite the loss.

“It was a hard-working game. A lot of emotion. Guys stuck together,” Tocchet said. “A couple self-inflicted goals that are preventable, but for the most part I thought the guys worked hard. A lot of guys gave effort.”

The Kraken followed up their historic win by defeating the Utah Hockey Club 5-2 on Monday, with Schwartz adding a goal and two assists.

“(Points) never come easy,” Schwartz said. “… I wasn’t happy with how we were playing (before the holiday break). I think each guy knew that we had a lot more to bring individually and for the team, and we’ve done a good job of that.”

Kraken goaltender Joey Daccord (upper body) has missed the last two games and did not practice on Wednesday, so it’s likely Philipp Grubauer will start again on Thursday. Ales Stezka, who has yet to play in an NHL game, is expected to remain the backup.

The strong Golden Knights aim to complete a sweep of the Flyers at home in Las Vegas

The Vegas Golden Knights start the new year leading the Pacific Division with 53 points and the best point percentage in the NHL at .716, following a strong 10-2-0 run in December.

However, they head into their Thursday game against the Philadelphia Flyers in Las Vegas feeling disappointed.

This is because they ended 2024 with a 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on New Year’s Eve, where the Golden Knights blew a 2-0 lead in the final 23 minutes.

The loss ended Vegas’ six-game winning streak, which was their longest since a seven-game streak to start the 2023-24 season.

“I know when I watch (the video), I’m going to be (ticked) because those are points we should have had,” said Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy. “We’re a better team than that, but they’re gone.”

Cassidy said his team lost some intensity after getting the early lead.

“Kind of self-inflicted plays,” Cassidy said. “We probably stopped playing halfway through the second period the way we needed to keep pushing, and it caught up to us.”

“We just have got to stick with our game plan,” said Vegas defenseman Noah Hanifin, who scored the goal to give the Golden Knights a 2-0 lead. “I think in the third period we sat back a little too much. No matter what the score is, you’ve got to stay on your toes and attack. I thought in the third we got away from that, which is not normal for us.”

The Golden Knights took only their fourth home loss in 19 games (15-4-0) and will play five of their next six games at T-Mobile Arena.

The Flyers, who are 2-2-0 on their six-game road trip, are coming off a 4-0 win against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday.

It was their second win in four nights during their three-game trip through California, following a 3-1 victory at Anaheim on Saturday and a 5-4 loss at Los Angeles on Sunday.

Philadelphia Flyers (NHL)

After their Thursday game in Las Vegas, the Flyers will wrap up their trip with a game at Toronto on Sunday.

“We’ve got a long trip here,” said Philadelphia coach John Tortorella after the win over the Sharks. “We’ve got teams coming up here that are very good hockey teams. Hopefully, we get some confidence from a couple of wins and bring it to them.”

A key concern for the Flyers is whether their No. 1 goalie, Samuel Ersson, will be available for the next two games.

Ersson made 15 saves against the Sharks before leaving with a lower-body injury after the second period. Aleksei Kolosov finished the game with seven saves in the combined shutout.

Ersson (9-6-2, 3.02 goals-against average) has missed time this season due to a groin injury. He was hurt when San Jose’s Luke Kunin collided with him in front of the net, but Ersson stayed in the game until the end of the period.

“I think it happened in the collision. … The way it’s gone for Sam, it’s a concern,” Tortorella said.

This game will be the second of the two matchups between the teams this season. Vegas won the first meeting 5-4 in a shootout on Nov. 25 in Philadelphia, with Jack Eichel scoring the shootout winner and adding a goal and an assist.

Sabres’ Bowen Byram heads back to Denver to play the Avalanche

Bowen Byram played a crucial role on defense when the Colorado Avalanche won the Stanley Cup in 2022. However, due to the team’s deep defensive group and a need for a second-line center, he was traded last year.

Byram was sent to Buffalo on March 6 in exchange for Casey Mittelstadt. On Thursday night, Byram will play in Denver for the first time since the trade when the Sabres face the Avalanche.

This will be the second time Byram plays against the team that drafted him fourth overall in 2019. He recorded an assist in Colorado’s 5-4 victory at Buffalo on December 3. While he was mostly on the second defensive pairing in Colorado, he has become one of the top defensemen for the Sabres.

Byram ranks second on the team in ice time, averaging 23:21 per game, and he is third among defensemen in points with 21 (four goals, 17 assists). He is just eight points away from matching his career-high total set last season.

Tage Thompson leads the Sabres in scoring with 30 points (18 goals, 12 assists), while Alex Tuch is second with 28 points (12 goals, 16 assists).

Buffalo enters Colorado after a 4-2 loss to Dallas in the second game of a four-game road trip. Before Tuesday night, the Sabres had won three straight after going 0-10-3. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen played in nine of the 13 games during that rough stretch, but he has been solid overall, holding a 2.95 goals-against average despite the loss.

Colorado Avalanche and Utah Hockey Club

“I feel like those times when we get frustrated, we’re not playing on the same page. It plays against us,” Luukkonen said. “I think that’s what happens when we don’t get the offense we want.”

Luukkonen played against Colorado last month, when the Sabres had a 4-0 lead after the first period. However, the Avalanche scored five straight goals, including four in the third period, to win the game. That started a 10-3-0 run for Colorado, which is now on a five-game winning streak.

The Avalanche have dealt with several injuries this season, including another one Tuesday during their 5-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets.

Valeri Nichushkin left the game with a lower-body injury in the third period. This happened the same night Jonathan Drouin returned from an upper-body injury that had kept him out for 16 games. Drouin had two assists in just his sixth game of the season.

Colorado did not practice on Wednesday, so there was no update on Nichushkin’s status for Thursday’s game.

“It shouldn’t surprise me (if Nichushkin were sidelined), but it sucks,” coach Jared Bednar said. “We’ve talked about just trying to get deeper through our lineup. That will push us back up to four guys out again. It’s not easy. It makes your job that much more difficult.”

Bednar is fortunate that Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen have remained healthy all season. MacKinnon leads the NHL in both points (61) and assists (47), while Rantanen is tied for third with 54 points (21 goals, 33 assists).

Flames look to keep playoff hopes alive against Utah

The Calgary Flames entered 2025 in a playoff spot, an impressive achievement for a team that was expected to be rebuilding and near the bottom of the standings.

However, the Flames are aware that their work is far from finished as they prepare to host the Utah Hockey Club on Thursday, with the season’s halfway point still to come.

“We’re not here to be in a playoff spot January 1st and then not when the season’s over,” said Calgary forward Ryan Lomberg. “We’re in one now, we’ve got to do what we can to stay in one and continue to climb here. We’re proving people wrong, but we’re not proving ourselves wrong.”

The Flames began a three-game homestand with a 3-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks on New Year’s Eve, moving them into the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.

After trading several key veterans last season and during the summer and focusing on younger players, the Flames were expected to struggle. Instead, they are staying competitive and are on a 4-1-2 run.

Veterans like Jonathan Huberdeau, who has 16 goals this season and is on track for a career-high total, and Nazem Kadri are contributing significantly. Kadri scored another third-period goal to break a tie against Vancouver. Eight of his 14 goals this season have come in the third period.

Colorado Avalanche and Utah Hockey Club

“I always try to approach it and have that killer-instinct type mentality and want to be the hero,” Kadri said. “When the game’s on the line, I like to step up. It’s not going to happen every time, but I sure like to believe that.”

Utah is going through a tough stretch, losing five straight games and earning just one extra-time point after a strong 8-1-2 stretch that got them into the playoff race.

They come into Calgary after a 4-1 loss at Edmonton on Tuesday. The game was tied 1-1 until the Oilers scored twice in a 20-second span early in the second period.

“I think we pushed and I still think we have a lot more in that room and we would all feel and say the same thing about (the Tuesday) game,” said forward Liam O’Brien. “We had a push and hit a crossbar and had an empty net there on the one play. We kept it tight, but we have to find ways to win games.”

Utah now trails Calgary by five points in the playoff race.

Despite the recent struggles, coach Andre Tourigny is doing his best to keep the team positive and focused on the good aspects of their play.

“I liked our mindset in the (Edmonton) game. I think we went to play the right way,” Tourigny said. “We defended with a lot of pride, we were resilient all night long. Obviously, I don’t think we had the energy and the wheels to generate a lot of offense, but I loved the fight in our guys a lot.”

Utah’s captain Clayton Keller, who leads the team with 37 points, missed the Edmonton game due to illness. It was unclear on Wednesday whether he would return to the lineup in Calgary.

Lakers aim for their second win against the Blazers this season

After the Los Angeles Lakers showed off their new look with mixed results on New Year’s Eve, they will return to the court on Thursday to play the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Lakers lost 122-110 at home to the Cleveland Cavaliers, who currently have the best record in the NBA, in their first game since trading reserve point guard D’Angelo Russell to the Brooklyn Nets and giving Austin Reaves a bigger role.

Reaves stepped up in the new role, scoring 35 points, adding 10 assists, and grabbing nine rebounds. Anthony Davis contributed 28 points and 13 rebounds, while LeBron James scored 23 points in his first game after turning 40 on Monday.

Though the Lakers lost for the second time in seven games, they seemed to play more as a team compared to their 134-110 loss at Cleveland on October 30.

“I think we’re trending in the right direction,” Davis said after Los Angeles made just 9 of 35 (25.7 percent) shots from 3-point range. “We just missed a ton of shots, wide-open looks that we missed. We make half of those, it’s a different game. … I think we could definitely be better on both ends of the floor, but I’m not disappointed where we are right now.”

Dorian Finney-Smith, who was traded from the Nets in the Russell deal, made his Lakers debut but played a quiet 20 minutes. He went 1 for 4 from the field, finishing with two points, two rebounds, and two assists.

“It was fun,” Finney-Smith said. “Energy was amazing in there. What I expected. The building was rocking, but we didn’t get the win.”

Portland Trail Blazers and Houston Rockets

The Trail Blazers had recently won two straight games but were defeated 125-103 at home by the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday. Anfernee Simons led Portland with 25 points, and Deni Avdija added 17.

Portland made just 8 of 36 (22.2 percent) of their 3-point shots, well below their season average of 33.1 percent. Avdija committed 10 of the Blazers’ 26 turnovers, which the 76ers turned into 36 points.

“I’m taking responsibility,” Avdija said. “I’ve never had that amount. The ball was not in my hands very good today.”

Avdija was starting in place of Jerami Grant, who missed the game due to a face injury. Without Grant’s 15.0 points per game, Portland struggled in the third quarter, getting outscored 27-18 as the game slipped away.

“It’s one of those games that when you have all those things working against you at one time, you usually have a scary night,” Blazers coach Chauncey Billups said.

Billups returned after missing the two victories to attend his grandmother’s funeral. Robert Williams III (ankle) played again, but Dalano Banton (hip) missed his third straight game.

This will be the second meeting between the teams this season, with the Lakers winning 107-98 over the Blazers on December 8 in Los Angeles. James missed that game with foot soreness, and Rui Hachimura stepped up with a season-high 23 points.

Thunder aim for longest win streak in OKC history against Clippers

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder has been on an incredible hot streak, which has helped the team extend their winning streak to 12 games heading into their Thursday matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers. This is the longest winning streak for the Thunder since they moved from Seattle.

During this stretch, Gilgeous-Alexander has been putting up impressive numbers: 33.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 2.5 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game, with a shooting percentage of 56.6%.

“I feel like I’m flowing,” said Gilgeous-Alexander. “I’m not pressing, I’m not thinking, I’m just out there hoopin’. The hard work is paying off.”

Gilgeous-Alexander, who started his career with the Clippers before being traded to Oklahoma City in 2019, had a huge game last Tuesday, scoring 40 points with four steals in the Thunder’s 113-105 win over Minnesota. In the last matchup between the Thunder and Clippers on November 11, a 134-128 win for Oklahoma City, Gilgeous-Alexander scored a career-high 45 points.

Despite the absence of Chet Holmgren, who is out with a hip injury, offseason addition Isaiah Hartenstein has stepped up and made a difference for the Thunder. Hartenstein praised Gilgeous-Alexander, saying, “It’s weird… it feels like he’s not forcing it.

Los Angeles Clippers and Golden State Warriors

He’s not going out there thinking about himself. He’s going out there trying to help the team, and he’s still getting 40. That’s why I think he should be the MVP this year.”

The Thunder are 16-1 since Hartenstein’s debut, with him earning 13 double-doubles during that time.

Meanwhile, the Clippers are coming off a tough loss to the San Antonio Spurs, 122-86, on Tuesday. Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue said, “Mentally we’ve got to be tougher and we’ve got to be better.” The Thunder have won both of the first two meetings between the teams this season, largely due to the Clippers’ high number of turnovers, totaling 46 in the two games, leading to 55 points for Oklahoma City.

Lue acknowledged that the Clippers need to limit turnovers against a team like the Thunder, who are excellent at scoring.

The Clippers are also looking forward to the return of their star player, Kawhi Leonard, who has missed the season so far due to right knee inflammation. Leonard has been ramping up his activity and could make his season debut against the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday. Despite Leonard’s absence, the Clippers are holding strong in sixth place in the Western Conference.

Clippers guard James Harden believes Leonard is mindful of the team’s current chemistry and wants to fit in without disrupting their flow: “He feels like he doesn’t want to come over and just mess up the flow and chemistry that we have been building up. I don’t think it’s going to be a problem.”

Jets kick off 8-game homestand with rematch against Ducks

Good teams are quickly realizing that they can’t take their foot off the gas when facing the Anaheim Ducks.

The Winnipeg Jets learned that lesson two weeks ago in Anaheim and are unlikely to overlook the Ducks when the teams meet on Thursday, as Winnipeg kicks off an eight-game homestand.

The latest top team to fall to Anaheim was the New Jersey Devils, who lost 3-2 to the Ducks on Tuesday night, dropping them out of first place in the Metropolitan Division.

“We thought it was going to come easy,” said Devils forward Timo Meier after the loss.

Earlier, the Ducks made a comeback from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Edmonton Oilers 5-3.

In both games, Anaheim forward Ryan Strome scored the game-winning goal in the final minutes.

“We’re starting to play good hockey,” Strome said after the win against New Jersey. “We’ve got a tough couple of games coming up, but good to close the year with a win.”

After facing the Jets, the Ducks will play the Oilers again the next night in Edmonton.

Anaheim has become more dangerous due to increased contributions from their second line.

While their top line of Strome, Troy Terry, and Frank Vatrano has been successful, Mason McTavish, Cutter Gauthier, and Robby Fabbri are now starting to click as well.

Winnipeg Jets (NHL)

The trio has combined for seven goals and eight assists in the last five games.

“We are communicating well on the ice, on the bench,” Fabbri said. “We are just complementing each other right now. Cutter is skating great, creating plays. McTavish is playing like a horse out there. It’s just going well right now. We’re just trying to ride the high.”

In their previous meeting on December 18, the Jets were leading Anaheim 2-1 with five minutes left, but the Ducks scored twice, including the go-ahead goal from Terry with just 26 seconds remaining.

After that loss, the Jets won four straight games to increase their lead in the Central Division. However, their streak was snapped in a 5-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday in Denver, with the score tied heading into the final period.

“Any time you can go into the third period tied 2-2 in this rink, you hope that you can come out on the right side of it,” said Winnipeg coach Scott Arniel. “We didn’t.”

The Jets were playing their third game in four days after returning from the Christmas break, and they had hosted the Nashville Predators the night before.

“We’re all pros,” said Jets defenseman Neal Pionk. “We’ve been through it before, and we get some teams at home that go through that travel, so we can’t use that as an excuse.”

In Winnipeg’s long homestand, the first three games are against teams with losing records. The Jets have been one of the best home teams in the NHL, with a 14-3-1 record.

“At the end of the day, it would have been nice to dig in a little more and find a way to come up with a win against Colorado,” Jets forward Morgan Barron said. “The effort is there. It’s just about finding ways to make those plays at the end of the game. We’re a resilient group. We know that. We’ll reset, go home, and get on a streak here.”

Senators face Stars, aiming to repeat past success in the new year

The Ottawa Senators are hoping their strong performance at the end of 2024 will continue into the new year, while the Dallas Stars are aiming for a more consistent stretch of wins.

The Senators, who are currently holding the last wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference, are looking to prevent the Stars from winning their third straight game on Thursday night.

Ottawa has been playing well, with 11 wins in their last 16 games, including a 9-3-1 record in December. They are coming off a 3-1 win over Minnesota on Sunday.

“We just have to keep building on what we’re doing right now,” said Ottawa forward Claude Giroux, who has two goals and four assists in the last seven games. “We’re not forcing anything, not playing high-risk hockey. We’re just trying to find ways to win games.”

Ottawa has been performing well on the road this season, with a record of 9-9-1. They have already won four of their first six games on their current nine-game road trip.

“We have a group that really cares about one another,” said Senators defenseman Travis Hamonic. “It’s all been nice and it’s been great, but for us, it’s about moving forward.”

Ottawa’s next challenge is against the Stars, who have been inconsistent this season. Their longest winning streak was four games at the start of the season, but Dallas is currently on a 3-0-1 run, coming off a 4-2 win over Buffalo on Tuesday.

Dallas Stars (NHL)

Jason Robertson had a goal and two assists in the victory, while Wyatt Johnston’s third-period goal broke a 2-2 tie and helped Dallas improve to 14-5-1 at home.

“We just kept pushing and pushing,” said Robertson, who has five points in the last two games. He finished December with three goals and eight assists in eight games.

Dallas’ Casey DeSmith made 21 saves on Tuesday, allowing only five goals in his last three starts. However, Jake Oettinger could return to the net, having stopped 24 of 25 shots in a win against Chicago last Friday.

Ottawa’s Linus Ullmark, who had a strong December, remains out with a back injury he suffered on Dec. 22. Leevi Merilainen made 30 saves in the win over Minnesota and is now 2-1-0 this season. Veteran Anton Forsberg could return from a lower-body injury, and Mads Sogaard has also been an option in goal.

Ottawa might also get key defenseman Artem Zub back from a foot injury that has kept him sidelined since Nov. 23.

Johnston, meanwhile, has been in strong form for the Stars, scoring in three straight games and recording eight points in their last seven games.

Maple Leafs play on without Auston Matthews against Islanders

The Toronto Maple Leafs will have to wait a little longer for Auston Matthews to return as they continue their push for the Stanley Cup.

On the other hand, the New York Islanders are running out of time to start winning and avoid a possible breakup of the team that made it to the NHL semifinals in 2020-21.

The Maple Leafs and Islanders will wrap up a home-and-home series on Thursday night, with Toronto visiting New York in Elmont, N.Y.

Both teams had a break on Wednesday after Toronto beat the Islanders 3-1 on Tuesday. David Kampf, Steven Lorentz, and John Tavares scored for the Maple Leafs in the win.

With the victory, the Maple Leafs tied the Florida Panthers for first place in the Atlantic Division and improved to 2-3-0 in the games Matthews has missed due to an upper-body injury. Matthews has been out since he aggravated the injury in a 6-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Dec. 20. He’s missed 14 of Toronto’s 38 games this season.

While Matthews will not play Thursday, he did practice with the team on Wednesday and hopes to see more improvement in the coming days. However, he admitted that he wasn’t sure if he would fully recover even with more rest.

“It’s tricky with these things sometimes,” Matthews said. “It’s a physical sport. It’s a contact sport. Things happen out there sometimes that are out of your control. Just try to manage it as best as I can, and that we can, and you just go from there.”

The Maple Leafs have had a hard time replacing Matthews’ high level of play. He scored 69 goals last season, the most by an NHL player since Mario Lemieux’s 69 in the 1995-96 season.

Los Angeles Kings and New York Islanders

Toronto had 118 goals as of Wednesday, which ranked 13th in the NHL, down from leading the Eastern Conference last season with 298 goals. Without Matthews, the Maple Leafs have scored three goals or fewer in nine games, including four of their last five.

For the Islanders, offense has been a problem even with the return of first-liners Mathew Barzal and Anthony Duclair in December. The two players have missed a combined 49 games due to injuries but have scored just one goal each in the five games they’ve played together since Dec. 21. In that stretch, the Islanders have a 2-3-0 record.

New York scored six goals to beat Toronto 6-4 on Dec. 21 and another six in a win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday. However, they’ve only scored four goals in their three losses since then.

The Islanders, who had 102 goals as of Wednesday, were tied for the seventh fewest in the NHL. They have won back-to-back games only twice this season and ended the year five points out of a playoff spot.

If their struggles continue into 2025, free agents like Brock Nelson and Kyle Palmieri, as well as Anders Lee and Jean-Gabriel Pageau (who each have one year left on their contracts after this season), could become trade targets for teams looking to add to their roster.

“We’re worried about just winning games and clawing ourselves back into it and not thinking about the opposite,” said Nelson. “We want to get off to a good start in the new year. We’ve been talking about getting on a roll and just playing good, solid hockey and getting a good stretch of wins to get ourselves back more in the mix, so that’s the main focus.”
