Minnesota quarterback Max Brosmer has shown this season that transferring from the FCS can be a path to success

Max Brosmer threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns in just three quarters on Saturday, leading Minnesota to a 48-0 win over Rhode Island. Brosmer, who transferred from New Hampshire where he led the FCS in passing yards per game last year, completed 24 of 30 passes. He helped the Golden Gophers (1-1) control the game, holding the ball twice as long as Rhode Island. “It’s been a fun process so far and I’m excited to see where it goes with this team,” Brosmer said. He has been practicing with the team since January. Although the Gophers are known for their strong running game under head coach P.J. Fleck, the focus on passing might indicate a new direction. “We want to reach a point where we can pass effectively to set up the run, and that’s what you saw,” Fleck said. “You need to be consistent, accurate, and efficient. There were three easy drops, so it could have been 27 of 30. We need to create balance.” Darius Taylor, who missed the season opener due to injury, ran for 64 yards and a touchdown and caught four passes for 48 yards. Minnesota’s defense limited Rhode Island to 135 total yards and forced four turnovers. Rhode Island’s sophomore quarterback Devin Farrell managed only 76 passing yards. Despite winning their opener against Holy Cross, the Rams have not forced a turnover in their two games. “Takeaways are a big part of the game, and we didn’t manage any. But I’m proud of the defense for keeping us in the game as long as they did,” said Rhode Island coach Jim Fleming, noting that his team was only down 3-0 after the first quarter. The Gophers took control by running two long scoring drives led by Brosmer, which kept the Rams’ offense off the field for most of the second quarter

When Max Brosmer was at New Hampshire, spring practices were held early in the morning, sometimes right after a snowstorm. The Wildcats had to start their 6 a.m. workouts in freezing cold temperatures made worse…
