The Mavericks and Thunder renew their rivalry as they face off in the NBA Cup quarterfinals

Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander from the Oklahoma City Thunder are two of the NBA’s top stars. Both finished in the top three for the Most Valuable Player award last season, with Gilgeous-Alexander taking second place and Doncic coming in third.

On Tuesday, the Mavericks and Thunder will face off in the first round of the NBA Cup knockout stage.

This game is a rematch of last season’s second-round playoff series, which Dallas won 4-2.

Doncic has been in great form since recovering from a right wrist sprain that caused him to miss five games in late November. In the four games since his return, he is averaging 31.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 9.5 assists per game.

Doncic enters Tuesday’s game with two consecutive triple-doubles.

In Saturday’s win over the Toronto Raptors, Doncic scored 30 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, and made 11 assists. This performance moved him past Wilt Chamberlain and James Harden, into seventh place on the NBA’s all-time triple-double list with 79.

“Talking about his skill set and filling up the stat sheet, he’s had two here, he can run them off,” said Dallas coach Jason Kidd. “We always expect him to have a triple-double, or sometimes we take him for granted. Right now, you can see that he’s starting to get into a groove.”

In last season’s playoff series, Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 32.2 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 7.3 assists. Doncic averaged 24.7 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 8.7 assists, with a triple-double in each of the last three games of the series.

Shai Gilgeous Alexander reacts in the game

Gilgeous-Alexander has scored at least 30 points in six of his past seven games this season.

Oklahoma City has won seven of its last eight games, including three straight, while the Mavericks come into the game on a seven-game winning streak.

Tuesday’s game, which also counts in the regular-season standings, will be the second matchup between the two teams this season.

Doncic missed the Mavericks’ 121-119 win over Oklahoma City on Nov. 17 due to a bruised right knee. P.J. Washington had 27 points and a career-high 17 rebounds in that game for Dallas.

The game was a close one, which has become a regular pattern in this series. Six of the last nine regular-season games between the teams have been decided by fewer than 10 points.

The first meeting of the season was also one of the Thunder’s last games without Isaiah Hartenstein, a 7-footer who missed the first 15 games of the season due to a hand injury.

Since his return, Hartenstein has helped Oklahoma City adjust after losing Chet Holmgren. In the eight games since he came back, Hartenstein has averaged 11.8 points, 12.8 rebounds, and 4.5 assists, a significant increase from his previous seasons where he averaged no more than 2.5 assists per game.

“He’s a phenomenal passer,” said teammate Alex Caruso about Hartenstein. “People don’t talk about him as a passer as a big man in the league. Of course, (Denver’s Nikola) Jokic is in a category of his own, but Hartenstein is still really impressive.”

For the Mavericks, P.J. Washington and Naji Marshall are questionable for Tuesday’s game due to illnesses. Jaden Hardy (right ankle sprain) and Maxi Kleber (illness) are confirmed to be out.

Washington was the only one of the four who played in Saturday’s win against Toronto.

Mavericks edge out Raptors to secure their 7th consecutive victory

Luka Doncic recorded 30 points, 13 rebounds, and 11 assists to lead the Dallas Mavericks to a 125-118 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Saturday night, securing their seventh consecutive win.

This was Doncic’s second straight triple-double and the 79th of his career, placing him seventh on the all-time list.

Kyrie Irving added 29 points for the Mavericks, who have won 11 of their last 12 games. Klay Thompson scored 20 points, P.J. Washington finished with 13, and Spencer Dinwiddie contributed 11 points.

Gradey Dick led the Raptors with 27 points, but they lost their second straight game. Scottie Barnes had 19 points and 14 assists, Jakob Poeltl scored 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and RJ Barrett added 18 points. Kelly Olynyk, making his season debut, scored 13 points.

Dallas led by as many as 24 points in the third quarter before the Raptors made a strong push to come back.

The score was 100-76 after Washington’s layup with 2:47 left in the third. The Raptors then went on an 11-0 run, helped by Olynyk hitting a 3-pointer and making two free throws, cutting the deficit to 100-87 as they headed into the fourth quarter.

Barnes hit a jumper to start the final period, reducing Toronto’s deficit to 11 points. The Raptors later got within five points at 120-115 after Dick made a three-pointer with 1:35 left.

However, Dallas secured the win by hitting four free throws before Toronto responded with a Barnes three, making it 124-118. The Mavericks held on to finish the game with the victory.

Doncic and Irving combined for 33 points before halftime, giving Dallas a strong 70-54 lead at the break. Barrett led the Raptors with 14 points in the first half.

Irving scored 16 points in the first quarter, helping the Mavericks to a 35-28 lead.

Luka Doncic climbs to 7th on the NBA’s all-time triple-double list after recording his 79th career triple-double

Luka Doncic’s 79th career triple-double pushed him ahead of some big names in NBA history.

Doncic scored 30 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, and dished out 11 assists for his second consecutive triple-double, helping the Dallas Mavericks win their seventh straight game with a 125-118 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Saturday.

This triple-double moved Doncic past Wilt Chamberlain and James Harden on the NBA’s all-time list, putting him in seventh place.

Next up for Doncic? Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd, who has 107 triple-doubles in his 19-year NBA career.

“I guess I’ve got to sit him,” Kidd joked about Doncic.

But don’t expect that to happen. Doncic will aim for his third straight triple-double when the Mavericks take on the Western Conference-leading Oklahoma City in an NBA Cup game on Tuesday.

In the game against the Raptors, Doncic had 15 points, eight assists, and six rebounds by halftime. He hit a 35-foot 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the second quarter and give Dallas a 70-54 lead.

Luka Doncic and Gradey Dick in the 2nd half

Earlier, he made a no-look, over-the-head assist to Kyrie Irving for a 3-pointer in the first quarter.

Doncic reached his triple-double on a defensive rebound with 1:58 left in the third. He had 21 points, 10 assists, and 10 rebounds in Thursday’s win over Washington.

“That’s an incredible feat for Luka,” Kidd said about Doncic moving past Chamberlain and Harden. “When you talk about his skill set and how he fills up the stat sheet, he’s had two here and could get more. We always expect him to get a triple-double, and sometimes we take it for granted. Right now, you can see he’s starting to get into a groove.”

Doncic impressed Kidd further by making several long assists against Toronto, even from under his own basket.

“It’s just incredible, the ability, the strength to throw it that far,” Kidd said. “He probably could have been a quarterback for the Cowboys.”

The Mavericks aim for their seventh consecutive victory as they face the Raptors

The Dallas Mavericks will aim for their seventh straight win when they play the Toronto Raptors on Saturday night.

Both teams come into the game after experiencing very different outcomes in their games on Thursday.

Dallas won 137-101 against the Washington Wizards to start a three-game road trip. They have now won 10 of their last 11 games.

On the other hand, the Raptors had their four-game home winning streak ended by a 129-92 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Luka Dončić recorded his first triple-double of the season in the Mavericks’ win, finishing with 21 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. This was his 78th career triple-double, tying him with Wilt Chamberlain and James Harden for seventh place in NBA history.

“I finally got one,” Dončić said. “Just to be up there mentioned with those great names, it’s unbelievable to me. I never take it for granted.”

Kyrie Irving led the Mavericks with 25 points, even though he played just 25 minutes. Dončić played 32 and a half minutes in a game where the Mavericks led by as many as 42 points. Eight Mavericks players scored in double digits.

Luka Doncic reacts after scoring

“First of all, I think we have a lot of depth,” Dončić said. “Anybody that steps on the court can produce a lot of things. Everybody knows their role. Chemistry, I think, is one of the most important things in teams like this. And we have it. Everybody gets along. And it’s just fun to play with these guys on the floor.”

In addition, Dončić had two steals and one block.

“When you talk about Luka’s ability to have the handprint that he can have on the game in a sense of passing, rebounding and scoring, he does all three things at a very high level,” said Dallas coach Jason Kidd. “Right now, he’s shooting the ball extremely well, and when he sees the double-team, he understands, as the quarterback, who’s open and how he can get the ball to them, and he’s done that at a high level.”

The Raptors can take lessons from the Thunder’s dominant performance. Oklahoma City had 15 steals and forced Toronto into 20 turnovers.

“Sometimes we make turnovers recklessly, and sometimes it’s because of the other defense,” said Toronto coach Darko Rajakovic. “I felt tonight it was their defense. They made us turn the ball over, so there’s going to be a lot of good film for us to learn from this.”

The Raptors were also missing Jakob Poeltl, who was out with an illness. Jonathan Mogbo stepped up in Poeltl’s place, scoring a career-high 17 points off the bench.

“(Poeltl is) really good for us in pick and rolls, setting screens, freeing up people,” Rajakovic said. “He’s just like settling force for us but, to be honest with you, it was really good for me tonight to see Jonathan Mogbo in an expanded role in, you know, in different matchups. He started in the second half and I thought that he had an overall good game tonight. But yeah, we missed (Poeltl) tonight.”

RJ Barrett also had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Raptors, achieving his fifth double-double of the season. Scottie Barnes added 12 points and 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the year.

Luka Doncic and the Mavericks overpower the Wizards, extending their losing streak to 16 games

Luka Doncic recorded his first triple-double of the season, and the Dallas Mavericks dominated the Washington Wizards with a 137-101 win on Thursday night, marking their sixth consecutive victory.

Doncic finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists, earning his 78th career triple-double in the regular season.

Kyrie Irving led the Mavericks with 25 points, while Daniel Gafford, a former Wizards player, scored 16 points off the bench. Dallas has now won 10 of their last 11 games.

For the Wizards, Malcolm Brogdon scored 16 points, and Carlton Carrington added 15. This loss marked their 16th in a row, tying the franchise’s longest losing streak.

The Mavericks made 20 of 38 three-pointers (52.6 percent), while the Wizards hit just 13 of 40 (32.5 percent). Dallas also dominated the boards, outrebounding Washington 64-48.

Dallas led by 18 points at halftime. Irving and Dereck Lively II helped spark a 9-2 run to start the third quarter, increasing the Mavericks’ lead to 77-52.

Washington attempted a comeback, and Alex Sarr’s three-pointer cut the lead to 83-69. However, Irving and Gafford led a 12-0 run that gave Dallas a 95-69 lead.

Gafford scored five quick points early in the fourth, pushing the lead to 110-78, and the Mavericks’ lead grew as large as 42 points near the end of the game.

The Wizards played without their second-leading scorer, Kyle Kuzma, due to a left rib sprain, and Corey Kispert, who has a left ankle sprain.

Washington briefly led 6-3, but Dallas quickly responded with a 15-0 run. The Wizards fought back, but Spencer Dinwiddie’s three-pointer helped the Mavericks end the first quarter with a nine-point lead.

In the second quarter, Klay Thompson hit two three-pointers, and Dallas extended their lead to 39-24. Doncic’s jumper gave them a 20-point advantage, and P.J. Washington’s two free throws pushed the lead to 53-31, their largest of the half.

Jordan Poole’s three-pointer cut the lead to 15, but Irving scored the last five points of the half, and Dallas led 68-50 at the break.

The Mavericks shot 12 of 22 (54.5 percent) from beyond the arc in the first half, while the Wizards made just 5 of 20 (25 percent).

Mavs aim for their sixth consecutive victory as they visit the Wizards

The Dallas Mavericks will look for their sixth consecutive win when they face the Washington Wizards on Thursday night.

Dallas secured their ninth win in the last 10 games with a 121-116 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday, advancing to the knockout round of the NBA Cup.

The Wizards, on the other hand, have lost 15 games in a row, including a tough 118-87 defeat to the Cleveland Cavaliers, which eliminated them from the NBA Cup group stage for the second consecutive season.

The Mavericks struggled in the third quarter against the Grizzlies, committing more turnovers (11) than field goals made (10), but they came back from a 15-point deficit in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Spencer Dinwiddie contributed 16 points off the bench, including two crucial 3-pointers to put Dallas ahead 116-111 with 1:09 remaining. He made 5 of 10 shots in 25 minutes, including 3 of 5 from beyond the arc.

Dallas managed to win despite committing 25 turnovers and missing 14 free throws.

“I thought the group did a great job of staying together,” Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd said. “There was a lot of positivity on the bench. We just kept fighting. (We had) a lot of turnovers — things that we haven’t been doing. But the team stayed together.”

Luka Doncic led the Mavericks with 37 points, bringing his total to 73 in the past two games. He also had 12 rebounds and four steals, shooting 11 of 22 from the field and 5 of 9 from three-point range. P.J. Washington scored 18 points, and Dereck Lively II added 17 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocks.

“We can fight, and we know we can fight,” Lively said. “We all lean on each other to try to play the best we can.”

The Wizards struggled against the Cavaliers, suffering their biggest defeat of the season. Washington is now just one loss away from matching the franchise record for consecutive losses, which is 16.

Jonas Valanciunas, Jordan Poole, and rookie Bub Carrington each scored 13 points for Washington. Valanciunas also grabbed 11 rebounds in 19 minutes.

Washington committed eight turnovers in the first quarter and trailed 35-20 at the end of the first. Although they cut the lead to 10 in the second quarter, the Cavaliers went on a 10-0 run to extend their advantage.

“The first quarter they came out and hit us in the mouth,” Wizards coach Sheldon Keefe said. “I thought we fought back at the start of the second quarter.”

The Wizards shot 38.6 percent from the field and 15.4 percent from beyond the arc, and they committed 21 turnovers.

“We probably played in crowds too much,” Keefe said, “and then we did miss some wide-open shots.”

The Wizards also faced injuries, with rookie forward Kyshawn George and guard Corey Kispert each suffering sprained left ankles in the second quarter and being ruled out. Guard Malcolm Brogdon also left the game in the third quarter due to right knee soreness.

Dallas won both matchups with Washington last season, claiming a 130-117 victory in Washington behind 31 points from Tim Hardaway Jr. and a 112-104 win in Dallas, with Doncic and Kyrie Irving each scoring 26 points.

Mavs erase 15-point gap to end Grizzlies’ winning streak

The Dallas Mavericks came from behind a 15-point deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat the Memphis Grizzlies 121-116 on Tuesday. Luka Doncic led the way with 37 points and 12 rebounds, while Dereck Lively III added 17 points and 11 rebounds.

The Mavericks, who have won five straight games and nine of their last 10, also received 18 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists from P.J. Washington. Spencer Dinwiddie contributed key back-to-back 3-pointers in the final minutes, finishing with 16 points. Dinwiddie’s 3-pointer with 1:40 left gave the Mavericks a 113-111 lead, and he followed up with another 3-pointer on the next possession.

Ja Morant scored a season-high 31 points for the Grizzlies, who had their six-game winning streak snapped. Desmond Bane added 19 points for Memphis, while Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Santi Aldama came off the bench to score 15 points and pull down eight rebounds.

The game was the final one for both teams in the NBA Cup group stage. With the win, the Mavericks are on track to make the West quarterfinals as a wild-card team.

Dallas shot 18 of 26 free throws in the fourth quarter, completing their largest comeback of the season.

Memphis was down by three at halftime but scored the first 10 points of the third quarter to take a seven-point lead. The Grizzlies then stretched their advantage to 13 late in the quarter, thanks to 10 Dallas turnovers.

Morant scored 11 points in the third, including four in the last eight seconds, giving Memphis a 95-82 lead going into the fourth. The Grizzlies outscored the Mavericks 38-22 in the third.

Dallas led for much of the first half, building a 10-point lead (48-38) midway through the second quarter after Doncic scored on a leaner from the free-throw line and converted the and-one. Doncic had 24 points by halftime, including four 3-pointers.

Memphis was up by one (26-25) after the first quarter but only briefly led in the second, after a 12-0 run gave them a 50-48 lead. Jaylen Wells finished the run with a 3-pointer, but Dallas finished the half strong and led 60-57 at the break.

Morant was limited to five points in the first half, while Jackson Jr. led the Grizzlies with 14 first-half points.

Luka Doncic returned from injury with a strong performance, scoring 36 points, adding 13 assists, and grabbing seven rebounds to help the Dallas Mavericks beat the Portland Trail Blazers 137-131 on Sunday night.

Doncic, who missed the previous five games due to a wrist injury, was 15 of 24 from the field and led the Mavericks to their eighth win in the last nine games.

Quentin Grimes had a season-high 28 points, shooting 5 of 7 from three-point range, marking his third consecutive game with over 20 points.

For the Trail Blazers, Anfernee Simons led with 27 points, Shaedon Sharpe had 22, and Deni Avdija added 21 points. Portland lost their fifth game in the last seven.

Deandre Ayton scored 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds, Toumani Camara added 17 points, and Jerami Grant contributed 14 points and six assists for Portland.

Kyrie Irving reacts in the game

Kyrie Irving (shoulder) and Klay Thompson (foot) did not play for the Mavericks, who shot 55.2 percent from the field and made 18 of 36 three-point attempts.

Portland was without Scoot Henderson (quadriceps) and shot 58.3 percent from the field, hitting 18 of 31 three-pointers.

The Mavericks started the fourth quarter strong, scoring 12 of the first 16 points to take a 112-101 lead on Dinwiddie’s three-pointer with 9:11 left.

Portland fought back, and after Camara’s three-pointer and a dunk by Dalano Banton, they closed the gap to 123-122 with 3:39 remaining.

Portland tied the game at 127 with a three-point play by Avdija with 1:54 left. Washington then put Dallas back ahead with a three-pointer with 54.1 seconds to go.

Gafford added a dunk to give the Mavericks a five-point lead with 29.2 seconds left, and Grimes made two free throws to secure the win.

Doncic had 20 points, eight assists, and six rebounds in the first half, helping Dallas lead 61-58 at halftime. Ayton led Portland with 14 points in the first half.

Simons, who had just three points in the first half, exploded in the third quarter, scoring 24 points, including four three-pointers.

Grimes hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give Dallas a 100-97 lead at the end of the third quarter, with both teams scoring 39 points in that period.

Kyrie Irving and the injury-depleted Mavericks look to challenge the Trail Blazers

The Dallas Mavericks are on their best run of the season, and much of their success has come without their star player, Luka Doncic.

Dallas will try to win its eighth game in nine tries when it faces the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday night.

Doncic missed Saturday’s 106-94 win over the Utah Jazz because of a wrist sprain, and he is expected to sit out again for the sixth straight game. Klay Thompson (foot injury) is also likely to miss his fourth consecutive game.

Kyrie Irving stepped up against the Jazz, scoring 30 points, dishing out nine assists, and grabbing four steals. He also tied his season-high with six 3-pointers and is averaging 28.0 points per game over the last four games.

The Mavericks also got a big performance from Quentin Grimes, who hit five 3-pointers and scored a season-high 24 points. This came after he scored 21 points in a 129-114 victory over the New York Knicks on Wednesday.

Mavericks coach Jason Kidd was pleased with how Irving handled the game when the Jazz made a run in the third quarter on Saturday.

Luka Doncic reacts after scoring

“The way he goes about the game, understanding when it’s time to go and when it’s time for others to go — he does a really good job of pushing the others to score,” Kidd said after the game. “We got some stops, and that led to our pace where we could get out and run. I thought Ky did a good job of pushing and getting us some easy ones at the rim.”

Dallas got off to a strong start against the Jazz, taking a 40-22 lead in the first quarter. However, their play dropped in the second quarter, and they led by just seven points at halftime.

“It could’ve gone either way,” Irving said about the game. “We just had to stay mentally locked in and make sure we finished the game.”

Portland, on the other hand, had lost four of its last five games before defeating the Sacramento Kings 115-106 at home on Friday.

Deandre Ayton led the Trail Blazers with a season-high 26 points and nine rebounds, dominating in the paint.

“Just attacking the paint and getting as many paint touches and moving the ball,” Ayton said about their success inside. “Just being confident in our shots and finishing them.”

Ayton also gave credit to his teammates for getting him involved. “Hats off to my backcourt for getting me going and being on me and just talking to me about being the last line of defense,” he added.

The Trail Blazers also got strong performances from Anfernee Simons (21 points, nine assists), Deni Avdija (20 points, nine rebounds), and Dalano Banton (17 points, career-high five steals).

Dallas Mavericks guard Jaden Hardy drives to the basket during the first half of an NBA preseason basketball game

Banton said the win against the Kings was important and helped Portland go 2-1 in West Group A of the NBA Cup competition.

While the Houston Rockets have secured first place in the group, Portland, the Minnesota Timberwolves (2-2), and the Los Angeles Clippers (1-2) are still fighting for a spot. The Trail Blazers will face the Clippers on Tuesday.

“This in-season tournament, I think it’s big for all players,” Banton said. “Not just our team, but I think everyone. It brings a whole different aspect to the game with the different court and the energy that it brings. I feel like it’s amazing. And we really do want to qualify for the next round.”

Trail Blazers forward Jerami Grant (knee) and point guard Scoot Henderson (quadriceps) are listed as questionable for Sunday’s game. Grant has missed the last two games, while Henderson has sat out four of the past five.

The Mavericks won all four games against the Trail Blazers last season and have won 10 of the last 12 meetings.

Mavericks win against Jazz without Luka Doncic

Kyrie Irving scored 30 points, leading the Dallas Mavericks to a 106-94 victory over the Utah Jazz on Saturday night in Salt Lake City.

The Mavericks improved to 5-1 without their star player, Luka Doncic, who was with the team but didn’t play due to a wrist injury.

Quentin Grimes contributed 24 points, and both P.J. Washington (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Daniel Gafford (14 points, 11 rebounds) each posted double-doubles in Dallas’ third consecutive win.

Lauri Markkanen, who had missed the Jazz’s previous game for the birth of his child, led Utah with 19 points on 7-of-20 shooting.

The Jazz struggled with their shooting, hitting only 35.8 percent from the field, as they lost their third straight game and seventh in the last eight.

Walker Kessler had a solid performance for Utah, recording 18 points, 10 rebounds, five blocks, and three steals. John Collins added 16 points and nine rebounds, while Collin Sexton and Brice Sensabaugh each scored 13 points.

Luka Doncic (NBA)

Irving started the game strong, hitting a 3-pointer on the Mavericks’ first possession, and Dallas never trailed after that. A dunk by Dereck Lively II less than four minutes in put Dallas up by 10, 16-6. By the end of the first quarter, the Mavericks led 40-22, thanks to a 13-0 run toward the end.

Utah came out strong in the second quarter, starting with a 10-2 run, and cut the deficit to just four points, 53-49, after Keyonte George and Kessler combined for five free throws. Irving ended the half with a last-second 3-pointer, giving Dallas a 56-49 lead.

The Jazz made a few runs in the third quarter to get within three points, but Irving and Washington scored 17 of Dallas’ 30 points in the quarter, pushing their lead back to 10, 86-76, going into the fourth.

In the fourth, the Jazz got as close as five points, but Irving hit a crucial 3-pointer, and the Mavericks held on to secure the win. Utah managed only 18 points in the final quarter.

Mavericks face off against the Knicks as other players rise to the occasion with Doncic sidelined

The Dallas Mavericks will look to get another win without Luka Doncic when they play the New York Knicks on Wednesday night.

Doncic has missed the last three games due to a sprained wrist and will be reevaluated later this week. The Mavericks, currently ninth in the Western Conference, have won five of their last six games and are 2-1 since Doncic got hurt.

“We’ve got a lot of competitors in this locker room, guys that want to win and put their body on the line,” said Mavericks star Kyrie Irving. “We’re not sure who is going to be healthy day-in, day-out, but those who suit up are going to be ready to play.”

Irving scored 32 points in the Mavericks’ win over Atlanta on Monday, where Dallas also played without Quentin Grimes and Klay Thompson. The Mavericks also got a big performance from 7-foot Daniel Gafford, who had 10 points and is averaging a career-high 12.3 points per game.

Gafford, 26, has played for the Bulls and Wizards before being traded to the Mavericks at last year’s trade deadline. He leads the NBA in field goal percentage at 72 percent.

“I’m just getting better as the days go by,” Gafford said. “It’s about having patience and trying to expand my offensive game to make more plays. Teams are blitzing and switching more, so I’m figuring out how to make the right passes and take advantage of mismatches.”

Luka Dončić
Luka Dončić (NBA)

This game is part of the Knicks’ five-game road trip. The Knicks are currently fourth in the Eastern Conference. On Monday night, they scored a season-high 145 points in a win over the Denver Nuggets, which left Nuggets coach Michael Malone furious in a post-game press conference.

Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau was more calm in his comments, focusing on his team’s defense.

“You look at what all the markers are telling you, over the last five games, we have averaged 123 points and given up 115, and we have won four of five. Net rating (is) the most important stat there is to me,” Thibodeau said. “Then I look at how many points we are giving up in the paint, we’re top five there, how many second-chance points, we’re top five there.

“I think the physicality is there, the rebounding is there. Now it never ends, it’s something you have to always work on, so that’s where we are.”

Offensively, the Knicks rank fourth in the NBA with 119.1 points per game. OG Anunoby scored a career-high 40 points in the win over Denver.

Karl-Anthony Towns has been exactly what the Knicks hoped for when they acquired him in the offseason. He leads the Knicks with 26.3 points per game, while Jalen Brunson has scored 24.9 points per game.

The Knicks are still missing key players, including Precious Achiuwa (hamstring) and Mitchell Robinson (ankle). It’s unlikely either will play during this road trip, but Thibodeau said both are making progress in their recovery.

“We’re really encouraged with both guys,” he said.

Dallas has beaten the Knicks in each of the last two seasons, winning the season series both times.

Kyrie Irving leads a late rally as the Mavericks defeat the Hawks

Kyrie Irving scored 16 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter, leading the Dallas Mavericks to a 129-119 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Jalen Hardy contributed 23 points, and Naji Marshall and Spencer Dinwiddie each added 22 points. The Mavericks won their fifth game out of their last six. PJ Washington had 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Daniel Gafford scored 10 points off the bench.

Jalen Johnson led the Hawks with 28 points and 11 rebounds, while Trae Young had 18 points and 16 assists. Bogdan Bogdanovic also scored 18 points, Dyson Daniels had 17, and Clint Capela added 12 points. The Hawks lost their third straight game.

The Hawks held a six-point lead at halftime and extended their advantage to 80-69 after Johnson hit a 3-pointer with 8:42 left in the third quarter.

Dallas closed the gap to four points before Johnson dunked with 5:27 remaining. The Mavericks then went on a 14-7 run, capped by a basket from Marshall. Dallas led 96-95 as the fourth quarter began.

Kyrie Irving pauses on the court in the first half of the game
