The Bruins (25-20-6), now 5-1-1 in their last seven games, were led by goalie Jeremy Swayman, who made 26 saves in his return after missing one game due to a minor upper-body injury suffered during a 5-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday.

“It’s something we wanted to monitor and get solved pretty quickly,” Swayman said about the injury.

“The trainers worked their magic, and I was able to get back out there today and feel really good … (Friday) was a good practice to get back into a rhythm, feel the puck, see plays develop, and I was able to watch our game against Ottawa as well, so visually learning allows me to get back on the ice and hopefully to have a seamless transition.”

Artturi Lehkonen scored for the Avalanche, and Scott Wedgewood made 12 saves. The Avalanche (28-20-2) have now lost three games in a row.

“I thought our guys did a nice job,” Colorado coach Jared Bednar said about playing less than 24 hours after Mikko Rantanen was traded after spending 10 years with the team.

“They came ready to play and play hard and play well. They’re all pros. I’m sure their minds thinking of that kind of stuff last night and their teammate prior to the game at points.

But I thought they did a great job with their focus. I thought we played hard, played to the game plan, didn’t capitalize on some of our chances and we kind of fell asleep for a couple minutes and it cost us the game, but I thought they did a nice job with their focus.”

Lehkonen gave the Avalanche a 1-0 lead at 1:30 of the second period. Juuso Parssinen controlled the puck, gained the offensive line, and fed a backhand pass to Lehkonen. He received it in the right face-off circle and his shot from the dot beat Swayman to the stick side.

The Bruins, who had only eight shots on goal through the first two periods, tied the game 1-1 when Geekie scored 25 seconds into the third period.

Geekie played a major role

Geekie then put the Bruins ahead 2-1 at 5:44. Pastrnak controlled the puck behind the Colorado net, skated around Wedgewood’s right side, and found Geekie on the far post for a tap-in goal.

Geekie has now scored six goals in his last seven games.

“It’s growing,” he said of his chemistry with Pastrnak and Pavel Zacha. “We’ve played together for a while now and it’s always easier when you learn the habits of the guys you’re playing with and it’s always fun to play with guys with lots of skill.

For me, you’re in awe with the things [Pastrnak] does with the puck and I just try to get open. It’s lots of fun right now, so let’s keep having fun.”

Pastrnak scored an empty-net goal with three seconds left to seal the 3-1 win. He extended his point streak to seven games, with seven goals and 10 assists, and has 22 points (11 goals, 11 assists) in his last 12 games.

“He’s finding his game,” Bruins interim coach Joe Sacco said. “He’s getting that confidence level up to where it usually is. We’ve said it before, he was going to find his offense sooner or later.

He’s too talented of a player and he’s competitive. He wants to help the team win offensively, and that’s how he feels he helps the team in most cases.

He takes it upon himself to make sure he’s producing at a high level and that’s what he’s doing now. He’s seeing the game very well and he’s feeling good about himself again.”

“I think it was just a tough business decision here for us,” MacFarland said Saturday before the Avalanche played the Boston Bruins. “I felt that the pieces we got made sense to strike now.”

Colorado traded Rantanen in a three-team deal to Carolina the night before, acquiring forwards Martin Necas and Jack Drury, along with a second-round pick in this year’s draft and a fourth-round pick in 2026. Carolina also received forward Taylor Hall from Chicago in the trade.

Rantanen, who was drafted 10th overall by Colorado in 2015, is 28 years old and a two-time 100-point scorer. He set a franchise record with 55 goals in 2022-23 and was in line to become an unrestricted free agent after failing to reach a new deal with the team this season.

When he was traded, he had 25 goals and 39 assists, leaving Colorado with 287 career goals in his ninth full season. He was part of the team that won the Stanley Cup in 2022.

Making the decision to trade a superstar was difficult for MacFarland.

“It hurts, right. He’s a home-grown talent. He’s a superstar person, he’s a superstar human being,” he said. “I think that’s sports, right. We’re going talk about it, people are going to talk about it. Your heart strings get tugged. That’s why we all do this. I’d be lying, I’m like that. He’s that good of a hockey player. … He had the UFA card and we felt this is what we had to do.”

Now, Colorado must focus on staying competitive as a Stanley Cup contender while planning for the future.

“You lose a superstar and we’re going to have to try and replace him in the aggregate – fifty-goal scorers don’t grow on trees,” MacFarland said. “You have to usually draft and develop them. Mikko was a home run for us for many, many years.”

Meanwhile, Rantanen will now look to help Carolina win its first Stanley Cup since 2006.

“You feel that you do what’s best for the logo and best for the team,” MacFarland said.

On Saturday, Makar reached a new milestone by scoring his 100th career goal in his 362nd NHL game. This made him the fifth-fastest defenseman to reach that mark since the 1943-44 season. Only Hall of Famers Bobby Orr (299 games), Paul Coffey (300), Ray Bourque (329), and Denis Potvin (348) reached it faster.

As usual, Makar downplayed the significance of the milestone. Two days before reaching the 100-goal mark, he said, “I guess just another thing along the way. I don’t really look at (milestones) like that. I wish it would come and go.”

However, his teammates are quick to praise him. Mikko Rantanen, who has played alongside Makar since his debut in the 2018-19 playoffs, said, “You kind of forget how special he actually is. He’s one of the best ‘D’ ever to play the game.”

With 101 career goals (he scored twice on Saturday) and 287 assists, Makar has an average of 1.07 points per game. If he keeps this pace, it would put him among the best defensemen in NHL history, joining players like Orr (1.39) and Coffey (1.09) for the highest career points per game.

“I’m a little biased, but you’re watching one of the best defensemen that’s ever played the game,” said coach Jared Bednar, who coached Makar to a Stanley Cup in 2022 and described him as the best of the best. “The league has a handful of guys that are super-dynamic right now. I think that’s a trend that we’re going to see moving forward. But in my opinion, he’s the best of the best.”

Makar is also a key player for the Avalanche, averaging 25 minutes and 37 seconds of ice time per game, which is the third most in the league.

“The stuff he does on the ice, it’s incredible,” said fellow defenseman Keaton Middleton. “He’s one of a kind.”

Middleton, who is trying to score his first NHL goal, listens closely to Makar’s advice on generating offense. “If he’s saying, ‘Try and shoot here,’ I’m going to be like, ‘OK, I’m listening to him.’ Just try and learn as much as I can,” said Middleton.

“I’m not going to try and play like him, because that’s not my role. But I definitely could take what he knows and his knowledge and his skill and try to apply it to myself.”

Makar’s skill was on full display when he scored his 100th career goal on a power play during a 6-3 win over Dallas. Positioned at the top, Makar passed the puck around before getting it back from Nathan MacKinnon. Makar then fired a rising wrist shot past Dallas goalie Casey DeSmith.

“It’s certainly impressive,” said Bednar of Makar’s milestone. “We’ve talked about that for years now, some of the milestones that he hits, and the timing of him, how quickly he hits them.”

Makar, who will participate in the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament for Team Canada next month, is also having another strong season. He’s already recorded his fifth 50-point season, the most by a defenseman in team history. He started the season on a 13-game point streak, which is the second longest streak by a blue-liner to start a season, behind only Orr’s 15-game streak in 1973-74.

“It’s fun to watch,” Middleton said of his teammate. “I don’t know what (other) words I can use to describe him. I guess I’ve got to get a thesaurus.”

Head coach Todd McLellan said, “The finish is what we were looking for, not necessarily the road map we had to get there. But we said we’d find out a little bit about our team. We found out that there’s some resiliency in the group.”

Goaltender Cam Talbot made 21 saves for Detroit (16-18-4; 36 points), who claimed their third consecutive victory. Columbus (16-17-6; 38 points) had 21 saves from Elvis Merzlikins.

Alex DeBrincat, who scored a power-play goal and had two assists, commented, “There’s no quit… our PK does a great job, and Berggy scores after that. I think we’re not getting down on the bench when we have a momentum swing. We just keep working to get that momentum back and it’s been going well for us.”

Columbus took the lead early with a power-play goal just 2:42 into the game. James van Riemsdyk deflected a shot from Coll Sillinger. Detroit responded at 6:55 when Patrick Kane scored his eighth goal of the season after a scramble in front of the net.

Erik Gustafsson’s first goal as a Red Wing gave Detroit the lead at 14:39 of the first period, followed by DeBrincat’s short-side goal at 17:09 for a 3-1 lead. The Red Wings outshot the Blue Jackets 12-7 in the first period.

DeBrincat shared, “If we can get that momentum and feel good about ourselves early in the game, it helps us go a long way.”

However, Columbus bounced back in the second period, tying the game at 3-3. Zach Werenski scored at 11:06, and Sean Monahan added another goal at 18:40.

McLellan noted, “In the second period, we let the game get away from us a little bit… we got caught tired and they scored two right near the end of a period.”

Detroit regained the lead at 4:54 of the third period when Dylan Larkin scored a power-play goal with a one-timer from the slot, assisted by Kane and DeBrincat.

DeBrincat praised Larkin, saying, “He’s our best player, I think. When he’s going, we’re winning games.”

At 17:19 of the third, van Riemsdyk’s second goal tied the game 4-4. Detroit challenged the play for goaltender interference but the call stood.

McLellan said, “We’re coming to play to win. There was a gamble aspect to our call. We also have confidence in our penalty killers, and they came through for us.”

With just 36 seconds remaining in the game, Jonatan Berggren scored his first career NHL game-winning goal on a breakaway after being released from the penalty box. The goal was set up by a blocked shot from Ben Chiarot and a diving play by Tyler Motte.

Berggren shared, “When you’re sitting in the penalty box, you kind of hope it comes like that… this time it was lucky.”

Berggren’s goal was the second go-ahead goal in the final minute of regulation this season for the Red Wings. The first was by Lucas Raymond against the New York Islanders on November 21.

DeBrincat praised the team, saying, “Our PK did an unbelievable job there… it’s great to get those two points and keep battling.”

McLellan did not provide an update on Jeff Petry, who left the game midway through the third period.

Tage Thompson had three assists, and Luukkonen made 23 saves for Buffalo.

Canucks 4, Kraken 3 (SO)

J.T. Miller scored the only goal in the shootout, helping Vancouver beat Seattle for just their second win in the past seven games (2-2-3).

Max Sasson, Conor Garland, and Tyler Myers scored during regulation for the Canucks. Thatcher Demko stopped 11 out of 12 shots before leaving with an apparent lower-body injury after a collision with teammate Noah Juulsen. Kevin Lankinen replaced him and made 13 saves on 15 shots.

Matty Beniers and Vince Dunn each had a goal and an assist, and Chandler Stephenson also scored for Seattle, which had its two-game winning streak stopped. Philipp Grubauer, starting his third game in a row for the injured Joey Daccord, stopped 19 of 22 shots.

Hurricanes 3, Panthers 1

Jaccob Slavin scored with 7:30 left to break a tie and give Carolina a win over Florida in Sunrise, Fla., getting revenge for two losses last month.

Brent Burns scored Carolina’s first goal, and Martin Necas added an empty-netter with 28 seconds remaining. The Hurricanes won only their second road game in the last 10 (2-6-2). Pyotr Kochetkov saved 25 shots.

Anton Lundell scored for the Panthers, and Sergei Bobrovsky had a strong performance in goal, making 37 saves. Florida had beaten Carolina twice in December, winning 12-3 overall, including a 6-0 shutout.

Wild 4, Capitals 3 (SO)

Matt Boldy scored in the second round of the shootout to give Minnesota a victory over Washington.

Boldy bounced back from hitting the post late in overtime by scoring in the shootout. Marc-Andre Fleury kept the win secure by saving Alex Ovechkin’s shot to end the game.

Tom Wilson and Martin Fehervary scored for Washington, and Charlie Lindgren made 30 saves. Ryan Hartman had a goal and an assist for Minnesota, while Marco Rossi and Yakov Trenin also scored. Fleury stopped 28 shots.

Rangers 2, Bruins 1

Jonathan Quick made 32 saves, earning his 399th career win and helping New York snap a four-game losing streak with a win over Boston.

Quick, now New York’s No. 1 goalie with Igor Shesterkin injured, earned his first win since Nov. 30. He is one win away from joining Marc-Andre Fleury and Sergei Bobrovsky as the third active goalie to reach 400 career wins.

Mika Zibanejad and rookie Brett Berard scored for the Rangers in the first period. Quick allowed only a goal to Elias Lindholm in the second. Boston’s Jeremy Swayman made 25 saves.

Ducks 4, Jets 3 (OT)

Troy Terry scored his second goal of the game with 1:26 left in overtime, lifting Anaheim to a win over Winnipeg.

Terry also had an assist, Radko Gudas had a goal and an assist, Leo Carlsson also scored, and John Gibson made 27 saves, adding an assist on the game-winner. The Ducks won for the third time in a row, tying a season-high streak.

Alex Iafallo had a goal and an assist for Winnipeg, while Mark Scheifele and Adam Lowry also scored. Josh Morrissey had two assists, and Connor Hellebuyck made 20 saves. The Jets have now lost two straight.

Maple Leafs 2, Islanders 1

Bobby McMann scored twice, including the game-winner on the power play with 2:59 left in regulation, as Toronto defeated New York in Elmont, N.Y.

McMann’s third two-goal game of the season was all Joseph Woll needed to secure the win for the Maple Leafs. Woll stopped 32 shots as Toronto won for the third time in four games.

Scott Mayfield scored for the Islanders, who have lost three straight. Ilya Sorokin made 29 saves.

Red Wings 5, Blue Jackets 4

Jonatan Berggren’s breakaway goal with 36 seconds left broke a tie and gave Detroit a win over Columbus.

Alex DeBrincat had a goal and two assists, Dylan Larkin and Patrick Kane each had a goal and an assist, and Erik Gustafsson also scored for Detroit, which improved to 3-1-0 under new coach Todd McLellan. Cam Talbot made 21 saves.

James van Riemsdyk scored twice and had an assist, Zach Werenski added a goal and two assists, and Sean Monahan scored for Columbus. Elvis Merzlikins made 21 saves.

Stars 4, Senators 2

Roope Hintz scored twice, including the go-ahead goal midway through the second period, and Dallas won its third straight by beating Ottawa.

After Dallas trailed 2-1, Jamie Benn and Hintz scored within 1:08 of each other in the second period. Matt Duchene added a third-period goal to help seal the win, with Jason Robertson and Wyatt Johnston both providing two assists. Jake Oettinger made 11 saves.

Brady Tkachuk had a goal and an assist for Ottawa, and Ridly Greig also scored. Leevi Merilainen made 21 saves, and Ottawa went 0-for-4 on the power play.

Utah 5, Flames 3

Lawson Crouse scored twice, including the game-winner, and Clayton Keller added a goal and an assist to lead Utah to a win over Calgary.

Logan Cooley and Kevin Stenlund also scored, and Olli Maatta had two assists for Utah, which ended a five-game losing streak. Karel Vejmelka made 23 saves.

Blake Coleman had a goal and an assist, and Connor Zary and Brayden Pachal scored for Calgary. Dan Vladar made 21 saves and stopped an Alexander Kerfoot penalty shot in the third period.

Ilya Samsonov made 23 saves, winning his fifth straight start, while Pavel Dorofeyev scored the game-winning goal in a three-goal second period as Vegas beat Philadelphia.

Mark Stone had a goal and an assist, and Nicolas Hague, Alexander Holtz, and Tanner Pearson also scored. Jack Eichel and Noah Hanifin each had two assists for Vegas, which extended its unbeaten streak to 5-0-1 against the Flyers.

Tyson Foerster and Travis Konecny scored for Philadelphia. Aleksei Kolosov made 22 saves.

Sharks 2, Lightning 1

Mario Ferraro scored the game-winning goal after a fight, and Marc-Edouard Vlasic had a point in his season debut as San Jose broke an eight-game losing streak by beating Tampa Bay.

Ferraro scored after fighting Mitchell Chaffee in the second period. Tyler Toffoli also scored for the Sharks, and Vlasic returned after missing the first 40 games of the season.

In a matchup of Russian goaltenders, San Jose’s Yaroslav Askarov made 24 saves to defeat Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy, who made 23 saves. Anthony Cirelli scored Tampa Bay’s only goal.

Jonathan Drouin tied the game with 7.7 seconds left in regulation, and Toews scored the game-winning goal in overtime after a breakaway. This victory extended Colorado’s winning streak to six games.

Toews also had two assists, and Cale Makar scored twice. Mikko Rantanen and Drouin each had a goal and an assist, while Ross Colton scored and Nathan MacKinnon registered three assists. The Avalanche won despite losing goaltender Scott Wedgewood to injury.

Zucker scored twice and Byram added a goal to give the Sabres a 3-0 lead midway through the second period. Makar’s goal made it 3-1, and Colton cut the lead to 3-2 early in the third. Benson’s goal restored the two-goal lead for Buffalo.

Coach Jared Bednar shared after practice on Thursday that Nichushkin’s situation is “day-to-day.”

“I don’t think it’s really serious, but it could keep him out seven-to-10 days,” Bednar said. He added that they would monitor his recovery over the next few days to see how he improves.

Nichushkin has been an important player for the Avalanche when he’s healthy. The team has a record of 209-74-27 when he’s in the lineup. He’s tied for fourth on the team this season with 11 goals, even though he’s played in only 21 games.

Nichushkin was suspended last May for at least six months and placed in Stage 3 of the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program. This announcement came during Colorado’s playoff run, marking the second consecutive postseason where Nichushkin couldn’t play because of personal matters.

The 29-year-old missed the first 17 games of the season and made his debut on November 15 against Washington.

Recently, the Avalanche welcomed back defenseman Josh Manson and forward Jonathan Drouin, but now they’ve lost Nichushkin, who left the game against Winnipeg on New Year’s Eve.

“Hopefully it’s short for Val,” Manson said. “That’s a big loss. He’s a big part of our group.”

On a positive note, the Avalanche saw their captain Gabriel Landeskog return to the ice on Thursday, skating with the team. Landeskog hasn’t played since Game 6 of the 2022 Stanley Cup Final, when Colorado defeated Tampa Bay.

Landeskog had a cartilage transplant in his right knee on May 10, 2023, to help him get back on the ice.

“All the guys are pretty in-tune with Landy’s recovery process, and the work he’s been putting in to try to get back to our team on a regular basis,” Bednar said. “He’s able to come out and join us and wheel around a little bit. I think it adds to the optimism of his return at some point.”

Bednar mentioned that Landeskog is “feeling good.”

“Still no real change in our approach and what’s going on,” Bednar added. “He’s just going to keep grinding forward until he gets to a point where he might be able to join the team on a regular basis.”

Byram was sent to Buffalo on March 6 in exchange for Casey Mittelstadt. On Thursday night, Byram will play in Denver for the first time since the trade when the Sabres face the Avalanche.

This will be the second time Byram plays against the team that drafted him fourth overall in 2019. He recorded an assist in Colorado’s 5-4 victory at Buffalo on December 3. While he was mostly on the second defensive pairing in Colorado, he has become one of the top defensemen for the Sabres.

Byram ranks second on the team in ice time, averaging 23:21 per game, and he is third among defensemen in points with 21 (four goals, 17 assists). He is just eight points away from matching his career-high total set last season.

Tage Thompson leads the Sabres in scoring with 30 points (18 goals, 12 assists), while Alex Tuch is second with 28 points (12 goals, 16 assists).

Buffalo enters Colorado after a 4-2 loss to Dallas in the second game of a four-game road trip. Before Tuesday night, the Sabres had won three straight after going 0-10-3. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen played in nine of the 13 games during that rough stretch, but he has been solid overall, holding a 2.95 goals-against average despite the loss.

“I feel like those times when we get frustrated, we’re not playing on the same page. It plays against us,” Luukkonen said. “I think that’s what happens when we don’t get the offense we want.”

Luukkonen played against Colorado last month, when the Sabres had a 4-0 lead after the first period. However, the Avalanche scored five straight goals, including four in the third period, to win the game. That started a 10-3-0 run for Colorado, which is now on a five-game winning streak.

The Avalanche have dealt with several injuries this season, including another one Tuesday during their 5-2 win over the Winnipeg Jets.

Valeri Nichushkin left the game with a lower-body injury in the third period. This happened the same night Jonathan Drouin returned from an upper-body injury that had kept him out for 16 games. Drouin had two assists in just his sixth game of the season.

Colorado did not practice on Wednesday, so there was no update on Nichushkin’s status for Thursday’s game.

“It shouldn’t surprise me (if Nichushkin were sidelined), but it sucks,” coach Jared Bednar said. “We’ve talked about just trying to get deeper through our lineup. That will push us back up to four guys out again. It’s not easy. It makes your job that much more difficult.”

Bednar is fortunate that Nathan MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen have remained healthy all season. MacKinnon leads the NHL in both points (61) and assists (47), while Rantanen is tied for third with 54 points (21 goals, 33 assists).

Nick Schmaltz scored the only goal for Utah, which has now gone winless in its last three games (0-2-1) and dropped to 5-7-4 at home. Goalie Karel Vejmelka stopped 33 shots.

With just over five minutes remaining in regulation, Lehkonen broke a 1-1 tie by scoring his second goal of the night. After Valeri Nichushkin’s shot was saved, Lehkonen was there to score on the rebound and put Colorado ahead.

Nichushkin’s assist extended his point streak to five games, during which he has tallied four goals and two assists.

Rantanen sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 1:50 left, his 20th of the season. Rantanen is also on a 10-game point streak, recording five goals and 13 assists during that time.

Lehkonen finished the scoring with another empty-net goal in the final minute, bringing his total to 13 goals for the season.

Despite the final 3-goal margin, the Avalanche had to recover from giving up a third-period lead.

Lehkonen opened the scoring at 11:52 of the second period. Sam Malinski passed to MacKinnon, who then found Lehkonen in the slot for the goal.

The Avalanche announced the deal, and a person with direct knowledge of the contract confirmed the value to The Associated Press, speaking on the condition of anonymity since the team didn’t disclose the figure, which was first reported by Sportsnet.ca.

This new contract will last through the 2029-30 season and shows that the Avalanche made the right choice in acquiring Blackwood from San Jose on December 9. Since the trade, Blackwood has posted a 3-1 record with a 2.03 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage.

“When we acquired Mackenzie a few weeks ago, we wanted to let him get to Denver, get acclimated to his new team, new city and then in due time we’d reach out to him and his representatives,” general manager Chris MacFarland said in a statement released by the team.

“As I said when we acquired him, we feel like Mackenzie has just gotten better and better every year and he has come in and done a great job with us in his first few starts. He’s a big body, athletic goaltender who is still young and still growing as a goaltender.”

Blackwood impressed in his Avalanche debut, making 37 saves in a 5-2 win over Nashville, becoming only the fourth NHL goalie to stop that many shots in his first game with a team. He has yet to allow more than two goals in any of his four starts with Colorado, improving his season record to 9-10-3.

Blackwood is currently finishing the second year of a two-year contract and is now on his third NHL team after spending his first five seasons with New Jersey. The Devils selected him in the second round of the 2015 draft, making him the second goalie taken that year.

In his career, Blackwood has a record of 84-92-25, with 11 shutouts and a 3.05 goals-against average in 219 games.

The Avalanche have reshuffled their goaltending duo, also acquiring Scott Wedgewood in a trade with Nashville on November 30.

These two new goalies have brought stability to the position for the team, which was allowing 3.71 goals per game in the first 24 games of the season with Alexandar Georgiev and rookie Justus Annunen in net.

Georgiev was traded to San Jose along with a 2026 second-round pick and rookie forward Nikolai Kovalenko to acquire Blackwood. Annunen was traded in the deal with Nashville.

The Avalanche (21-15), who play at Utah on Friday, have gone 8-3 in December, allowing an average of just 2.45 goals per game. They’ve moved up from ninth to sixth place in the Western Conference standings.

This four-day break is the Avalanche’s first of the season, and they are making the most of it. They are also getting back to their best, with some players returning to the lineup and their goaltending tandem of Scott Wedgewood and Mackenzie Blackwood looking solid.

“They’re just giving us a chance to find our legs sometimes, which is great,” said coach Jared Bednar. “But we’re still an evolving team. I don’t want to say everything’s fixed. It’s not. We have more to do.”

The Avalanche went into the break after beating the Seattle Kraken 5-2 on Sunday. Colorado came from behind after being down 2-1, scoring 11 seconds after falling behind and finishing with four unanswered goals.

The Avalanche have won three straight games and seven of their last nine, moving into third place in the Central Division. Many players are playing well, including Joel Kiviranta, who scored his first career regular-season hat trick.

Valeri Nichushkin scored in his fourth straight game, Cale Makar had three points, and Mikko Rantanen extended his point streak to nine games, which is a season-high. His career best is 14 games.

The team’s power play has also been effective, scoring four goals in the past three games.

“I think for us right now, we have that attack mentality,” Makar said. “And everybody’s shooting, everybody’s working (the puck) around, there’s nobody just holding on to it. So when guys do that, and guys feel spots, it’s really fun to be out there.”

Utah, on the other hand, is wrapping up a three-game homestand and looking to bounce back from a 3-2 loss to the Dallas Stars on Monday. Despite the loss, Utah had a strong third period and almost completed a comeback.

“I’m proud of the effort of the guys,” said coach Andre Tourigny. “I’m proud of the pushback we had because we all talk about the second period, which is totally true and fair, but in the third period we had a heck of a pushback.

The guys never quit, and they gave their all. They had that passion until the end, so that was great to see the team react that way.”

The loss ended Utah’s eight-game points streak (6-0-2), which had helped them climb to just two points outside a playoff spot.

Like the Avalanche, Utah also has players who are playing well. Barrett Hayton has scored in two straight games, Clayton Keller is on a five-game point streak with four goals and six assists, and Logan Cooley had a five-game streak ended by the Stars.

Utah’s goal now is to keep up their strong play, push for a playoff spot, and end their long playoff drought dating back to their time in Phoenix.

“We have to understand game management,” forward Nick Bjugstad told the Salt Lake Tribune. “We’ve got to learn, we’ve got to move on. I think this team has a lot of upside, so we want to fulfill that.”

Blackwood had the better performance in goal, making 32 saves, while Georgiev stopped 27 shots for the Sharks.

The Avalanche goalie said he felt comfortable right away and enjoyed the game.

“Obviously, you’ve got a lot of friends over there, but at the end of the day, it’s still a hockey game,” Blackwood explained. “Got to go out there and do your job.”

Blackwood revived his career with the Sharks, who had acquired him from the New Jersey Devils in June 2023 for a sixth-round pick. Last season, he had a 3.45 goals-against average with an .899 save percentage in 44 games for a struggling San Jose team. This season, he posted a 3.00 GAA and .909 save percentage in 19 games.

He received applause from Sharks fans when he was introduced.

He credited San Jose general manager Mike Grier, who had been an assistant coach with the Devils when Blackwood played there, for giving him the chance to play after injury issues in New Jersey.

“When I got healthy, he believed in me, brought me in and gave me a chance to play,” Blackwood said before the game. “I got myself turned around, got my game up and back on track. He was a big part of giving me the opportunity to do so.”

Even though Blackwood spent just over one season with the Sharks, he said his former teammates are “still like brothers” to him, highlighting the strong bond they developed. Blackwood, a pending free agent, would have been open to signing an extension with the Sharks but said the rebuilding team is “not in the same place as me and my career.”

The 28-year-old Blackwood moved from the NHL’s worst team last season to the Colorado Avalanche, who have Stanley Cup aspirations but struggled early this season, partly due to issues in goal. Colorado, which entered the day tied for the second Western Conference wild card, has used four different goalies in the first 30 games.

One of those goalies was Georgiev, who led the league in wins last season with an 86-41-11 record with the Avalanche. But he had a tough start to this season. In addition to trading Georgiev, Colorado also sent backup Justus Annunen to Nashville for goalie Scott Wedgewood on Nov. 30.

Georgiev said Thursday’s game felt “a little weird” because he knew his former teammates’ tendencies, which he said could be a disadvantage because he didn’t want to overcommit.

“It wasn’t too emotional,” Georgiev said. “I just tried to play it as any normal game, not overcommit and just enjoy it. It’s fun to play against those guys, too. They’re buzzing. They’re a very fast team.”

Avalanche coach Jared Bednar praised Blackwood before the game, saying he’s been “fantastic.” He added that both Blackwood and Wedgewood are veteran goalies who feel comfortable in their roles and are more outgoing than the team’s previous goaltenders.

Colorado has gone 6-3 since trading for Wedgewood, with Blackwood joining the team two weeks later. Avalanche forward Ross Colton said Blackwood has “brought some confidence” to the team.

“Both of them have been awesome,” Colton said. “They’re great in the locker room as well. Just in the room, it feels different, which is a good thing.”

Georgiev made 29 saves in a 4-3 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday night. His chances of starting against his former team seem even more likely after backup goalie Vitek Vanecek was hit in the face with the puck while sitting on the bench and couldn’t continue for the rest of the game.

The Sharks called up their top goalie prospect Yaroslav Askarov from the AHL affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda, on Wednesday. Askarov has played in two games for the Sharks, with a 1-0-1 record, a 1.96 goals-against average, and a .927 save percentage.

Blackwood made 22 saves in a 3-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Monday, marking his second straight start since the trade on Dec. 9.

“It was a fine game,” Blackwood said. “Nothing tremendous, but there’s a lot to build on.”

No matter who starts in goal for the Avalanche, they are eager to improve a power play that’s 1 for 18 in the past seven games, after going 0 for 4 against the Canucks.

“A work in progress for us lately,” Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. “They’re in a battle right now to make it more consistent, to get to the interior of the ice, to get some good looks. There are some things I like (against Vancouver) where they took a step but just couldn’t find the back of the net.”

Colorado forward Mikko Rantanen is on a six-game point streak (three goals, nine assists), placing him in a four-way tie for second place in the NHL for points (47) as of Wednesday.

San Jose will try to recover after letting a 3-2 lead slip away with eight minutes left in their game against the Jets.

The Sharks also led 3-2 in the third period against the Utah Hockey Club on Saturday, but they allowed the last two goals and lost 4-3.

“It’s just disappointing,” Sharks forward Tyler Toffoli said. “I thought we put together a pretty good game (against Winnipeg), and obviously (we had) some breakdowns and goals against, but at the end of the day, we got to keep moving forward and look at the positives here and try to continue to build and finish games off.”

The Sharks have lost five of their past six games and entered Wednesday just one point ahead of the last-place Anaheim Ducks in the Pacific Division. The Ducks were playing the Jets on Wednesday.

“It was better, but we still lost the game. Still a lot of work to do,” San Jose coach Ryan Warsofsky said of the Winnipeg game. “We had a power play when they made it 3-3 and had some opportunities on that power play. They pushed. You could kind of feel it coming with their execution on some breakouts. They got us hemmed in and they jumped on us.”

Sharks rookie Macklin Celebrini has been their top player lately. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft is on a four-game point streak (three goals, four assists), including a goal and an assist against Winnipeg.

Other teams are definitely noticing.

“I think they’re understanding how good of a player he is,” Warsofsky said. “He’s a special player.”

This was Sherwood’s first-ever hat trick in his seven NHL seasons. He has now scored 11 goals in 30 games with the Canucks, surpassing his previous career-high of 10 goals from last season when he played for the Nashville Predators.

The Canucks finished their six-game homestand with a 3-2-1 record, improving their home record to 6-7-4 for the season.

Demko saved 30 of 31 shots, with the only goal coming from Valeri Nichushkin in the last 46 seconds of the game. Demko had been recovering from a knee injury he suffered in the Stanley Cup playoffs last April, and this was his third game back after missing time.

Though he had some struggles in his first two games this season, he showed much more of his past All-Star form on Monday.

Mackenzie Blackwood made 22 saves for the Avalanche, who have lost two of their last three games.

Mikko Rantanen assisted on Nichushkin’s goal and extended his point streak to six games, with three goals and nine assists during that stretch.

Sherwood’s first goal gave Vancouver a 1-0 lead at 16:14 of the first period. Blackwood stopped close shots from Danton Heinen and Sherwood, but Sherwood managed to score on the rebound.

Sherwood’s second goal came during a penalty kill in the second period at 16:04. He intercepted a pass from Nathan MacKinnon just inside the Vancouver blue line, then sprinted down the ice and scored on a breakaway, marking his first career short-handed goal.

This goal highlighted Colorado’s recent struggles on the power play. The Avalanche were 0-for-4 on the power play in this game, and they have failed to score on 14 power plays in their last five games.

Sherwood completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal at 17:25 of the third period. Although Colorado outshot Vancouver 12-5 in the final period, they only scored one goal, with Nichushkin finding the net in the last minute.

Nashville was without defenseman Roman Josi, who missed his second straight game due to a lower-body injury. Despite that, the Predators held Colorado off until the middle of the second period.

Casey Mittelstadt fought for the puck behind the Nashville net and passed it to Colton, who scored a one-timer at 11:32 to put Colorado up 1-0. It was Colton’s 10th goal of the season.

Cale Makar almost made it 2-0 soon after, but Saros made a save on his shot. MacKinnon then scored a close-range shot at 18:52 to give Colorado a 2-0 lead.

In the third period, Blackwood stopped a shot from the point to keep Nashville scoreless. Lehkonen then scored a slapshot at 3:30 to make it 3-0.

Stamkos scored for Nashville at 13:03, and Evangelista added another goal at 15:05 on a delayed penalty. MacKinnon and Lehkonen both scored empty-net goals to complete the win. For MacKinnon, it was his 13th goal, and Lehkonen now has 10.

Two weeks later, Annunen could get the chance to face his former team when the Predators visit the Avalanche in Denver on Saturday night.

Annunen showed glimpses of the talent that led Colorado to select him 64th overall in the 2018 draft. He posted a 6-4-0 record for the Avalanche before the trade, but his .872 save percentage became a problem, and combined with Georgiev’s struggles, the team’s goaltending was among the worst in the NHL.

Annunen made 35 saves in Nashville’s 4-1 victory over Dallas on Thursday, his first win for the Predators. That win ended an eight-game losing streak for Nashville, which included three overtime losses.

Juuse Saros has been the main goalie for Nashville and has a 2.72 goals-against average despite the team’s poor record.

Nashville has some skilled players leading the team. Defenseman Roman Josi leads with 23 points (seven goals, 16 assists), followed by Filip Forsberg (nine goals, 10 assists) and former Avalanche center Ryan O’Reilly (seven goals, 10 assists).

Nashville’s defense and goaltending haven’t been the issue during its 1-5-3 stretch. Five of those eight losses were by one goal, and only twice did an opponent score more than three goals.

Thursday’s win was the first time in 10 games that Nashville scored at least four goals.

“We want to be harder to play against, and kind of consistent with that,” said O’Reilly. “It’s not going to get any easier against Colorado.”

The Avalanche had a weak performance in their 4-1 loss to Utah on Thursday, partly because it was their first home game since November 30, and the team was dealing with an illness. Nathan MacKinnon scored the only goal and continues to lead the NHL with 47 points.

MacKinnon and Mikko Rantanen are the only teammates in the top five in scoring in the NHL. MacKinnon has 11 goals and a league-leading 36 assists, while Rantanen is tied for fourth in goals (18).

Ross Colton has nine goals and was leading the team in goals before suffering a fractured foot on October 28. He has scored a goal in four games since returning from the injured list.

Colorado’s offensive strength hasn’t been the problem, but they’ve struggled with keeping the puck out of their net. Coach Jared Bednar mentioned that the change in goaltenders—swapping Georgiev for Mackenzie Blackwood—has helped, especially on the penalty kill.

The Avalanche killed off 14 of 16 penalties during their 4-1 road trip before allowing one to Utah.

“Goaltending did not help that for a long portion of the season, and now that the goaltending is playing better, the penalty kill numbers are better,” said Bednar.

Blackwood, who was acquired in a four-player trade that sent Georgiev to the San Jose Sharks, could get the start in net on Saturday night, though he has also been sick.

Blackwood served as Scott Wedgewood’s backup on Thursday night, which suggests he might be feeling better.

Karel Vejmelka made 23 saves, and Logan Cooley recorded two assists for Utah, which has now won five consecutive road games.

Nathan MacKinnon scored the only goal for Colorado, and Scott Wedgewood, making his first home start for the Avalanche, saved 19 shots. Wedgewood was acquired from Nashville on November 30.

Utah took the lead at 8:26 of the first period when Guenther’s pass intended for Cooley deflected off Artturi Lehkonen’s skate and went past Wedgewood, giving Guenther the goal.

In the second period, Utah added two more goals within 1:47. Kolyachonok made it 2-0 with a shot from the right circle at 8:05.

Then, just nine seconds after Givani Smith took a minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, Guenther scored again on a one-timer from a pass by Nick Schmaltz at 9:52, bringing his season total to 12 goals.

Colorado increased the pressure after that, but Utah’s defense held firm. Guenther took a double minor late in the second period, wiping out a Utah power play. In the final minute, Colorado nearly scored when Cale Makar’s shot trickled through Vejmelka and was sitting in the crease, but it was cleared away before it could cross the line.

With Wedgewood pulled for an extra skater late in the third, MacKinnon scored at 15:26, but 23 seconds later, Stenlund sealed the win for Utah with an empty-net goal, his fifth of the season.

Wedgewood was pulled again, but Vejmelka kept Colorado from scoring, coming close to a shutout but settling for a 4-1 win.

Colorado recently changed its goaltending situation, trading away Justus Annunen and Alexandar Georgiev in separate deals. In return, the Avalanche got two new goalies they hope can help them make a deep playoff run.

Scott Wedgewood was acquired from Nashville on Nov. 30, and Mackenzie Blackwood was brought in from San Jose on Tuesday. Wedgewood has started the last two games but will likely be Blackwood’s backup once everything settles.

“With Mackenzie, we feel like he’s just gotten better and better every year,” Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland said. “He’s young. He’s been outstanding in San Jose this year. … We believe there’s some untapped potential in him as he’s growing as a goaltender, but we feel very excited to add him. He’s a big body. He’s athletic. We think he’s stylistically going to fit really well with how we play.”

Colorado did not practice Wednesday after returning from a 4-1 road trip that ended in Pittsburgh on Tuesday night, so it’s not clear which goaltender will start against Utah.

Trading both goaltenders is a risky move, but it was seen as necessary after Georgiev and Annunen showed inconsistency this season. The Avalanche have top-level skaters and are still aiming for a championship, so finding stability in goal was crucial.

Those top players have been carrying the team and should continue to do so in the second meeting with Utah. Nathan MacKinnon, despite a recent scoring slump, leads the NHL with 46 points (10 goals, 36 assists), and Mikko Rantanen is fourth with 42 points (18 goals, 24 assists).

Rantanen recorded his third hat trick of the season against Pittsburgh and finished with five points, the same as MacKinnon.

Colorado feels like it’s found its rhythm going into Thursday’s game.

“Yeah, it does,” MacKinnon said when asked if this is how the Avalanche should play. “Once we get (Jonathan Drouin) back, we’ll be even better.”

Utah lost the first meeting between these teams 5-1 in Salt Lake City on Oct. 24, but they have been playing well recently. The Utah Hockey Club is 4-1-2 in their last seven games, finding success with a mix of experienced and younger players.

Captain Clayton Keller leads the team in scoring with 26 points (nine goals, 17 assists), and Dylan Guenther has 25 points (10 goals, 15 assists). Utah has 10 players who have recorded double-digit points, including defenseman Mikhail Sergachev (seven goals, 13 assists).

Sergachev was acquired from Tampa Bay in the offseason to strengthen the defense. He is a true No. 1 defenseman and leads the team in ice time, averaging 25:27 per game. Getting Sergachev was considered an important move to help build a playoff-contending team.

“He is a top-of-the-line NHL defenseman who can play in just about every style and just about do everything on the ice,” Utah defenseman Ian Cole told ESPN. Cole and Sergachev were teammates in Tampa Bay.

“He’s well put together. He’s strong. He can play hard. He can play skillfully. He can shoot the puck. He can score goals. He can run the power play. He can kill penalties. He can do everything,” Cole said.

MacKinnon put Colorado up 1-0 at 6:31 of the first period. He won a race for a loose puck in the neutral zone, created a two-on-one, and fired a shot past Jarry’s left arm from the left faceoff circle.

Rantanen, playing in his 600th NHL game, made it 2-0 at 18:22. Cale Makar retrieved a loose puck in the left circle and passed it to Rantanen in front, where Rantanen lifted the puck over Jarry’s right pad.

Rantanen added another goal at 5:46 of the second period, pushing the lead to 3-0. Calvin de Haan faked a shot from the blue line and passed to Rantanen near the corner. Rantanen then fired it in short side.

Glass put the Penguins on the board at 7:21, scoring from the right circle off a pass from Evgeni Malkin to make it 3-1.

Bunting pulled Pittsburgh closer at 18:53, narrowing the gap to 3-2. Erik Karlsson sent a spinning pass from the corner to Bunting in front, and Bunting scored with a wrist shot over Wedgewood’s blocker.

Valeri Nichushkin extended Colorado’s lead to 4-2 at 3:23 of the third period. He carried the puck down the right side, maneuvered around Pittsburgh defenseman Marcus Pettersson, and slid the puck by Jarry’s right skate.

Artturi Lehkonen made it 5-2 at 12:21 when Rantanen set him up for a wrist shot that beat Jarry blocker side.

With Jarry pulled for an extra attacker, Rantanen completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal from the right circle at 15:08.

The Avalanche have won three of their last four games on their current five-game road trip, which ends in Pittsburgh. This comes after they lost three of their previous four games. The trip started strong last Tuesday when Colorado made a huge comeback, overcoming a four-goal deficit to win 5-4 against the Buffalo Sabres.

Recently, the Avalanche won 4-0 against the New Jersey Devils on Sunday, completing a successful weekend back-to-back.

“I think it was our best game of the year on the defensive side of it,” said Colorado coach Jared Bednar after the game. “To be honest with you, I just felt like we looked really organized, really disciplined, above the puck early.”

The Avalanche scored first for the third straight game on Sunday, and they’ve opened the scoring in four of their last five games. This is a big change from allowing the first goal in five consecutive games earlier. However, they’ve had trouble in the first period, giving up the most goals in the league (42) while scoring only 25.

“It doesn’t help you out,” said defenseman Devon Toews about the slow starts. “If you’re not going to be consistent in this league, you’re not going to win.”

Unsteady goaltending has also been a problem, but the Avalanche hope to solve this by acquiring Mackenzie Blackwood from the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday. In the trade, Colorado gave up goalie Alexandar Georgiev and forward Nikolai Kovalenko, and also received veteran forward Givani Smith.

Blackwood has a record of 6-9-3 in 19 games this season (17 starts) with a 3.00 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage.

To improve their backup goalie situation, the Avalanche also acquired Scott Wedgewood from the Nashville Predators on Nov. 30 in exchange for 24-year-old Justus Annunen. Wedgewood made his debut with Colorado on Dec. 3, replacing Georgiev after he gave up four goals on eight shots against Buffalo. Wedgewood stopped all 22 shots he faced.

Wedgewood has won two of his three games with the Avalanche, including the win over the Devils.

Meanwhile, the Penguins have won five of their last six games after a rough stretch where they lost six of seven. They bounced back from a 4-2 loss to the New York Rangers on Friday with a 5-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday.

“Nobody was happy with how the game went (Friday),” said forward Bryan Rust. “… We just played harder. Came out from the drop of the puck. That team was physical, they played hard, they played in your face. For the most part, we matched that. Played really hard. (Goaltender Tristan Jarry) was great. Special teams were pretty good. It was a good win.”

Jarry, who had a rough start to the season with just one win in his first six starts, has now won four straight games. He has allowed only seven goals in his last three games, finishing each with a save percentage above .900. Before this stretch, he had only one game with a save percentage above .900, which was a 3-2 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Nov. 19.

While players like Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are usually the ones leading the Penguins’ offense, the team has also gotten some help from secondary scoring, especially from Blake Lizotte. The 27-year-old forward, who turns 27 on Friday, has six points (three goals and three assists) in a four-game point streak.

Wedgewood, who was drafted by the Devils and spent part of three seasons with the team, improved his record to 4-0 against New Jersey. This was his first shutout of the season and the seventh of his career.

Jake Allen made 19 saves for the Devils, who were shut out for the fifth time this season. Despite winning their last two games, the Devils dropped to 1-1 on their five-game homestand.

Neither team scored on the power play, with Colorado going 0-for-2 and New Jersey 0-for-3.

Colton put Colorado ahead 1-0 at 4:07 of the first period. Mittelstadt passed the puck behind the net to Valeri Nichushkin, who then set up Colton for a one-timer into the net.

O’Connor made it 2-0 at 14:52 with a redirect from a pass by de Haan.

In the second period, Lehkonen extended the lead to 3-0 at 14:36. Mittelstadt took advantage of a New Jersey turnover and passed the puck to Lehkonen, who scored on a breakaway.

The Devils were limited to just two shots on goal in the second period.

New Jersey pulled Allen from the net with over five minutes left, but Wedgewood made several key saves in the final minutes.

Parker Kelly secured the win with an empty-net goal, assisted by Mikko Rantanen, with 3:55 left to make it 4-0.

Rantanen now has 37 points this season, with 15 goals and 22 assists.

Colorado is currently on a five-game road trip and will play the second game of a back-to-back after a 2-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.

Cole Makar ended an eight-game goal drought, Valeri Nichushkin also scored, and Alexandar Georgiev made 29 saves to help the Avalanche, who had lost three of their last four games.

“He was outstanding,” said Avalanche coach Jared Bednar about Georgiev. “Especially when we needed him. (He made) key saves to keep it 1-0, key saves to keep it 2-1, and then the flurry at the end.”

Nichushkin opened the scoring in the first period with his third goal in two games and sixth of the season since his return on Nov. 15.

“He’s been huge for us,” said Makar. “(He) eats a lot of minutes and (is) starting to play really well. (He’s) starting to drive his feet, and when he’s driving his feet, really nobody in the league can stop him, so (it’s) fun to watch.”

Ross Colton, who missed 17 games with a broken foot, returned and played 13 minutes and 16 seconds, with three shots on goal and a plus-1 rating.

The Avalanche are expected to start goalie Scott Wedgewood on Sunday. Wedgewood, who previously played for the Devils, was traded to Colorado after serving as a backup goalie for the Nashville Predators in late November. He has faced the Devils five times and has won all three of his starts, with a .958 save percentage and 1.28 goals-against average.

The Devils began their five-game homestand with a 3-2 win against the Seattle Kraken on Friday. They will also face Toronto, Los Angeles, and Chicago during the stretch.

Jesper Bratt had a goal and an assist in his 500th NHL game, while Timo Meier and Luke Hughes also scored against Seattle. Jack Hughes added two assists, and Jacob Markstrom made 17 saves. The Devils have won six of their last eight games.

“We’re starting a (five-game) home stretch, and we wanted to come out and win this first game,” Meier said. “It wasn’t pretty, but we found a way. Maybe a puck bounced our way, but you got to earn those sometimes.”

Bratt has nine points in his past four games (three goals, six assists), including a four-point performance on Monday in a 5-1 win against the Rangers.

Jack Hughes had the primary assist on his brother Luke’s first goal of the season. Luke Hughes, a defenseman, was thrilled with his first career goal, saying, “I mean, 20 games is enough for me (to score my first goal), so good for me to break through and a big win for our team.”

Forward Tomas Tatar also made his return to the Devils lineup after missing two games due to a lower-body injury, playing 11 minutes and 32 seconds.

Colorado took the lead just past the halfway point of the first period. Nichushkin had a shot blocked by Ben Chiarot but recovered the puck and scored from the slot, beating Husso on the glove side. Samuel Girard and Casey Mittelstadt assisted on the goal.

Detroit had some chances in the first period, with Jonatan Berggren and Joe Veleno coming close, but they couldn’t score. There were no power plays in the first period, but late in the frame, Makar was called for hooking, which was offset when Tyler Motte was sent to the box for embellishment.

The first power play of the game came early in the second period when Vladimir Tarasenko of Detroit was called for hooking. Makar made the most of the opportunity, firing a shot from near the blue line that beat a screened Husso.

Detroit had their first power play midway through the period when Mikko Rantanen was called for slashing, but they managed only one shot on goal during that time. Raymond got Detroit on the board with 1:47 left in the second period, tipping in a shot from Dylan Larkin for his eighth goal in the last nine games.

The Red Wings pulled their goalie for an extra skater in the final minutes, but Georgiev held strong and didn’t allow the game to go into overtime.

In their most recent loss, Detroit failed to earn a point. The Red Wings gave up a last-minute goal in the third period, losing 2-1 to Ottawa on Thursday.

“We outchanced them five-on-five, we spent a little too much time in the penalty box, but we give up two goals in 60 minutes on the road, you certainly hope to find a way to get a point out of it,” said coach Derek Lalonde. “It’s a little frustrating how it ended.”

The Red Wings have had many close losses recently. Their last six losses have been by just one goal.

Josh Norris, a Michigan native, scored both of the Senators’ goals on Thursday.

“That’s a tough one,” said Detroit captain Dylan Larkin. “I think we played well enough to get two points, and we got zero. With 40 seconds left, we just got to button things up and get it to overtime.”

With injuries keeping goaltenders Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon off the ice, the Red Wings are relying on Ville Husso. Husso, who had a rough start to the season and spent some time in the AHL, made 30 saves in the Ottawa game but needed one more to send it into overtime.

“We have to find it from within and show what we’re capable of,” Larkin said. “We have a tough matchup at home on Saturday, then we’re back on the road and then we’re at home (before) Christmas. It’s time to start playing some hockey and not just set the bar for an overtime loss or getting one point.”

The Avalanche have also been struggling lately. They’ve lost three of their last four games and four of their last six. On Thursday, they lost 5-3 to Carolina in Raleigh, N.C.

“We didn’t move the puck quick enough, didn’t handle their pressure well enough,” said Avs coach Jared Bednar.

The game was essentially decided by one goal, with the Hurricanes scoring an empty-netter at the end.

Goaltender Scott Wedgewood made his first start for Colorado after being acquired from Nashville last weekend. He made 30 saves during the game.

“He gave us a chance,” said Bednar. “He made a lot of big saves, especially in (the) first period.”

Valeri Nichushkin scored two of Colorado’s goals. Since being activated in mid-November, he has scored five goals. Nichushkin was allowed to return after completing Stage 3 of the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program, which included being suspended without pay for at least six months.

“If you look at a guy like Val, he’s been consistently getting better since he’s been back in the lineup,” Bednar said. “And now he’s starting to produce.”

The game against Detroit is part of Colorado’s five-game road trip.

Wedgewood, who was acquired from Nashville last Saturday, made his first start for Colorado after getting a win in relief earlier in the week.

The Avalanche, playing the second game of a five-game road trip, couldn’t come back after recovering from a four-goal deficit in their 5-4 win over Buffalo on Tuesday night.

The teams scored three goals in the final 2:11, starting with Necas’ power-play goal that pushed Carolina to a 4-2 lead and increased his point total to 41.

Nichushkin answered just 24 seconds later, but Svechnikov finished his career night with his ninth goal of the season with 16 seconds left.

Carolina won for the seventh time in 12 games where they allowed the first goal of the game.

The Avalanche took the lead 9:13 into the first period when Lehkonen capitalized on a Carolina defensive mistake, breaking away from the neutral zone to score.

Lehkonen has scored three goals in his last four games, bringing his season total to six, despite missing the first 12 games.

Carolina responded when Robinson scored his eighth goal at 16:05 in the first period.

The Hurricanes had two power-play opportunities in the first period but failed to score. However, Jarvis scored with the man advantage at 4:09 in the second period to give Carolina a 2-1 lead.

Roslovic added another goal less than three minutes later for his 13th of the season. He has been scoring at a much higher pace this year compared to the 2023-24 season, where he only had nine goals in 59 games with Columbus and the New York Rangers.

Nichushkin scored his first goal of the game at 14:41 in the third period before Necas answered with the game-winning goal.

Both teams have hit rough patches, making their matchup on Thursday night in Raleigh, N.C., important for both sides.

“I think we know we’re in a little bit of funk here with our play,” said Carolina forward Eric Robinson.

The Hurricanes have lost three straight games for the first time this season. In their 4-2 loss to Seattle on Tuesday, they managed only 19 shots on goal, which is unusually low for a team that typically takes many shots. They had just seven shots after two periods.

“We fought back a little bit, but we can’t play two periods like that,” said Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour. “We were not sharp.”

The Avalanche, with a 7-5-0 road record, came from behind to win 5-4 at Buffalo on Tuesday after scoring four goals in the third period. Nathan MacKinnon scored twice and added an assist, helping his team recover from a 4-0 deficit.

“We went into a couple of things, more details of what we need to do and what we need to see from every guy if we were to get back into that game,” said Avalanche coach Jared Bednar. “They knew we needed to get more competitive. We definitely got more relentless on the puck.”

That win was just Colorado’s second in their last five games (2-3-0), with the other win coming in a shootout. So, despite the big comeback, there are still concerns for the Avalanche as they begin a five-game road trip.

“It’s nice to see our team dig in,” said Bednar.

Carolina, on the other hand, has struggled to create the scoring chances that usually define their play.

Hurricanes forward Martin Necas leads the league with 13 multi-point games, including a goal and an assist on Tuesday. But he needs more support, and Brind’Amour has noticed that.

“Our top guys got to come and that includes everybody,” he said. “If we’re going to win, we have to have those guys being the top guys.”

Brind’Amour has made changes to the line combinations, hoping to get more production from his forwards.

“I’ve done that, so that’s not the answer,” Brind’Amour said. “You got to look in the mirror and do your job. We’re going to turn the page.”

Despite some struggles earlier in the week, there were positives for Carolina, like their success on the power play. The Hurricanes have scored 12 power-play goals in their last 11 games.

Colorado’s goalie Scott Wedgewood, making his debut with the Avalanche, got his first win since October on Tuesday, stopping all 22 shots in relief at Buffalo. He had started the season with Nashville.

Wedgewood has had past success against Carolina, including a memorable 44-save performance in his Dallas debut in March 2022 in Raleigh.

Carolina’s 9-3-0 home record is impressive, but they have lost their last two games at home. Overall, they have dropped five of their last seven games (2-4-1). The Hurricanes will play five of their next six games at home, starting with Thursday’s game.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to come together and get back to our winning ways,” said Robinson. “Everybody is working hard. Everybody wants to win.”

Thursday’s game will be the second stop on Colorado’s five-game road trip.

Colorado didn’t just lose the game in Dallas—they also lost defenseman Josh Manson. He left in the second period with an upper-body injury and didn’t return. Coach Jared Bednar didn’t provide an update on Manson but expressed his frustration with the constant injuries to his players.

“It’s definitely frustrating … it just seems like we’re having a tough time getting through a game right now healthy,” Bednar said.

If Manson is out for any time, he’ll join the list of injured Avalanche players. Some players have returned from injuries, such as Artturi Lehkonen, who missed the first 13 games after shoulder surgery, and Jonathan Drouin, who returned after missing 16 games but is hurt again. Ross Colton is also out with a fractured foot.

Rantanen then cut the lead to 4-3 with his team-leading 15th goal at 8:03. Georgiev was pulled for an extra skater late in the game, but Marchment sealed the win for Dallas by scoring into the empty net at 17:17 for his ninth goal of the season.
