NHL defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk announces his retirement after 14 seasons. The veteran player secured a Stanley Cup victory in 2020 with the Lightning

Defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk, who won a Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020, is retiring after 14 seasons in the NHL.

Shattenkirk shared the news in a statement released by the NHL Players’ Association on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old, from New Rochelle, New York, played in 952 regular-season games with seven teams, and also made 91 playoff appearances. He had been unsigned since last season, where he scored six goals and 18 assists in 61 games with the Boston Bruins.

“I can proudly say that I have accomplished most of my career goals. I scored big goals, including a Stanley Cup final overtime goal, played in All-Star games, represented my country in the Olympics, and won a Stanley Cup,” Shattenkirk said.

“What makes me even prouder when I reflect back on my career, are the countless friendships that I have made along the way. … Thank you to all my teammates, it was an honor to play with all of you.”

Shattenkirk was drafted 14th overall by Colorado in the 2007 draft and made his NHL debut with the Avalanche in 2010-11. He was then traded to St. Louis that season, where he played for more than six seasons. During that time, he was selected to represent the U.S. in the 2014 Sochi Olympics and earned an All-Star game selection in 2015.

Tampa Bay Lightning and San Jose Sharks

Shattenkirk’s most famous goal came in the 2020 Stanley Cup Final when he scored in overtime to give Tampa Bay a 5-4 win over Dallas in Game 4. Tampa Bay went on to win the series in Game 6. He had joined the Lightning after his contract with the New York Rangers was bought out the previous summer.

He also played for Washington, the New York Rangers, and Anaheim. His best statistical season came in 2016-17, when he finished with 56 points, including 13 goals, playing for both St. Louis and Washington.

In his career, he finished with 103 goals and 381 assists for 484 points.

Off the ice, Shattenkirk was also influential as a member of the NHLPA executive board and the NHL Player Inclusion Coalition.

During college, he was part of Boston University’s 2009 NCAA championship team.

“I never knew hockey would take me this far,” Shattenkirk said. “This game has had a dramatic impact in developing me into the man I am today.”

Oilers rely on their goaltenders as they prepare for showdown with Lightning

The Edmonton Oilers are known for their strong offensive play with stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, but lately, they have been getting noticed for their goaltending as well.

Goalies Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard will lead the Oilers as they face the Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday night in a matchup between two high-scoring teams.

Skinner ended last season on a rough note, allowing the goal that ended the Oilers’ chance to win the Stanley Cup in Game 7 of the Final. The goal, scored by Sam Reinhart of the Florida Panthers, put the Panthers ahead 2-1 in the second period, and Edmonton couldn’t recover.

Even after that tough moment, Skinner has bounced back this season. He is 3-1-0 with a 1.52 goals-against average and a .945 save percentage in his last four games.

Skinner wasn’t chosen for Canada’s 4 Nations Face-Off roster, with goalies Jordan Binnington (St. Louis Blues), Adin Hill (Vegas Golden Knights), and Sam Montembeault (Montreal Canadiens) making the team instead. However, Skinner has not been bothered by this.

“He’s been outstanding,” said Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch. “You look at the games we’ve won, and our goaltenders, including Pickard, have usually been better than the goalie on the other side.”

Edmonton is 6-2-0 in its last eight games, most recently defeating St. Louis 4-2 on Saturday.

Tampa Bay Lightning

On the other hand, the Tampa Bay Lightning kicked off a four-game road trip with a 4-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday. Brayden Point led the team with two goals and two assists, and Nikita Kucherov, who had missed two games due to an injury, returned to score one goal and add two assists.

Despite the win, Lightning coach Jon Cooper was not fully satisfied with his team’s performance and wants a faster start on Tuesday. Tampa Bay didn’t score in the first period and only had seven shots on goal, falling behind 1-0.

“Not pleased with our effort level. We lost every battle. I think we were lucky to be down just 1-0. It’s tough,” Cooper said. “We flew in here (Monday), got a little skate in, and then we have to play an afternoon game. I’ll give them a mulligan on that first period, but they really came out in the second and pushed.”

Brayden Point was named the NHL’s Second Star of the Week after having back-to-back games with at least four points. He now has 10 career four-point games and has reached 300 assists. He is also just one power-play goal away from 100 career goals on the power play.

There is some bad news for the Lightning, as center Anthony Cirelli may miss Tuesday’s game. Cirelli suffered an injury on Sunday against Vancouver and did not practice on Monday.

Brayden Point records four points as Lightning defeat Canucks

Jake Guentzel scored a power-play goal late in the third period to break the tie, and the Tampa Bay Lightning began their four-game road trip with a 4-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Sunday afternoon.

Guentzel’s goal came when a shot from the Lightning deflected off Vancouver’s goalie Kevin Lankinen (who made 28 saves) and hit the Lightning player. It then bounced off Vancouver’s Noah Juulsen and went in for Guentzel’s 12th goal of the season.

The goal was initially called off due to a hand pass, but a quick review confirmed it was valid. Brayden Point sealed the victory with an empty-net goal, giving Tampa Bay its 11th win in the past 13 games (11-2-0) against Vancouver.

Point finished with two goals and two assists, including his 300th career assist. Nikita Kucherov returned to the lineup after missing two games and added a goal and two assists. Goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy made 22 saves.

Anthony Cirelli was hit hard into the boards by Juulsen in the first period and did not return to the game.

For the Canucks, Quinn Hughes and Kiefer Sherwood scored, but Vancouver’s record over the past three games dropped to 1-1-1.

Vancouver Canucks and Columbus Blue Jackets

Wearing their black throwback jerseys, Vancouver had an early advantage when Tampa Bay’s Brandon Hagel received a double-minor high-sticking penalty, leaving Hughes bleeding. However, the Lightning killed off the extended power play, allowing just one shot on Vasilevskiy.

Hughes returned to the ice after receiving medical attention and, with 3:52 left in the first period, scored a backhand goal from the left circle to give Vancouver a 1-0 lead.

Soon after, Vasilevskiy stopped Max Sasson’s breakaway attempt for his first NHL goal. Kucherov then tied the game at 4:40 of the second period, scoring his 13th goal from the right circle.

Point scored a power-play goal less than two minutes later, marking his 99th career goal and giving Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead. The Lightning dominated the second period, outshooting Vancouver 18-5.

Sherwood tied the game at 4:52 of the third, pushing a shot past Vasilevskiy for his eighth goal.

Lightning’s offense set for a tough challenge against the Canucks

The Tampa Bay Lightning are bringing a strong offense as they travel for the second of four visits to the West, starting with a Saturday afternoon game against the Vancouver Canucks to complete the season series between the two teams.

In their first meeting on October 15 in Tampa, Brayden Point, Brandon Hagel, and Anthony Cirelli each had a goal and an assist, leading the Lightning to a 4-1 win in their home opener.

That win, which happened nearly two months ago, was similar to the Lightning’s recent 8-1 victory against the San Jose Sharks on Thursday. However, the October game didn’t see as many goals as the recent one did.

Everything went well for the Lightning against the improved Sharks, as they led 5-0 after the first period. They also made it easy for goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy and matched their season-high in goals scored. The team also scored eight goals against the New Jersey Devils on October 22 and the Colorado Avalanche on November 25.

Entering Saturday’s game, the Lightning’s average of 3.92 goals per game is second only to the Washington Capitals (4.04).

After their game against Vancouver, the Lightning will head to Alberta to play the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames. The trip will end with a game against the Seattle Kraken.

“It’s always good to go on the road on a positive note,” said Lightning coach Jon Cooper. “But I also think you’ve got to turn the page on (the last game) and understand what we have ahead of us and some of the teams we’re going to face. This will be a good test for us.”

Vancouver Canucks and Columbus Blue Jackets

Nikita Kucherov, the Lightning’s first-line right winger, has missed the last two games due to an undisclosed injury.

After losing to Tampa Bay early in the season, the Canucks were 0-2-1, which was disappointing given the high expectations for the season. However, since that loss, coach Rich Tocchet’s team has gone 14-6-2 and is currently in the top half of the Pacific Division despite having played fewer games than other teams in the division.

The Canucks are 5-1-1 since November 23 and are coming off a strong 8-5-0 record in November.

In their 5-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday, Vancouver started its second six-game homestand with a comeback after falling behind 2-0. It was the 15th time in 25 games that Vancouver gave up the first goal, but they have a 9-5-1 record in those games.

“Something just clicks, and we start winning our puck battles and playing our style of hockey, but it’s obviously frustrating,” said Canucks forward Brock Boeser. “We’ve talked about this many times, and we’re all pretty aware that our starts aren’t good, and that was unacceptable again. I don’t know if it’s a lack of preparation or what.”

Boeser helped start the comeback on Friday with his seventh goal of the season, and later had an assist for his 400th NHL point, all with the Canucks.

“It means a lot just to do it with the guys in this room and the fan base,” Boeser said. “I always say how much I love playing here so it’s obviously special.”

Goalie Thatcher Demko was dressed as a backup for the first time since April 21, when he injured his knee during a Western Conference first-round playoff series.

Lightning dominate Sharks with five goals in first period for easy win

Brandon Hagel scored two goals in just 23 seconds during a five-goal first period as the Tampa Bay Lightning easily defeated the San Jose Sharks 8-1 on Thursday.

Cam Atkinson and Conor Geekie each had a goal and an assist before Hagel scored twice. Jake Guentzel, who finished with two points, added a goal to end the explosive period, helping the Lightning move closer to an 8-0-1 record in their last nine games against San Jose.

Anthony Cirelli, Nick Perbix, and Nick Paul also scored for Tampa Bay. Brayden Point recorded a career-high four assists in his 600th NHL game, while Victor Hedman and Ryan McDonagh each provided two assists.

Tampa Bay goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy made 20 saves to improve his all-time record to 8-2-0 against San Jose. This was his second win in his last five starts. The Lightning have alternated wins and losses over their past six games.

Alexander Wennberg scored for the Sharks, who dropped to 4-8-4 on the road and had their three-game winning streak come to an end.

San Jose Sharks (NHL)

Sharks goalie Vitek Vanecek gave up five goals on 12 shots and was pulled after the first period. Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 21 of 24 shots in relief.

Despite playing without top-line right winger Nikita Kucherov, the Lightning were dominant, getting two goals from their third line on their first six shots.

Atkinson scored Tampa Bay’s third shot on Vanecek just 86 seconds into the game by deflecting Geekie’s long shot for his third goal. Geekie added his fourth goal at 7:29.

Hagel then scored twice, first deking Vanecek at 8:32, and then adding his 12th goal at 8:55, giving Tampa Bay three goals in 1:26. Guentzel capped the period with his 11th goal on a power play at 17:45.

In the second period, McDonagh’s shot was tipped in by Cirelli for his 11th goal, and ninth in his last 10 games, at 4:16. Perbix added his third goal to extend the lead to 7-0 by the end of the second period.

Wennberg scored his seventh goal to break Vasilevskiy’s shutout bid just 14 seconds into the third period.

Paul, returning after missing six games, responded with his sixth goal at 6:01, tying Tampa Bay’s season-high goal total.

Maple Leafs withstand Lightning’s late comeback attempt

Chris Tanev scored a goal and added an assist as the Toronto Maple Leafs, visiting Tampa Bay, jumped to a four-goal lead and held on to win 5-3 on Saturday night.

Matthew Knies, Nicholas Robertson, John Tavares, and William Nylander also scored for Toronto, which has won eight out of its last 10 games (8-2-0) and finished November with a record of 8-3-1, even though they were missing their top scorer, Auston Matthews, for most of the month.

Matthews returned after missing nine games due to an upper-body injury and contributed two assists. Mitch Marner also had two assists.

Joseph Woll, the Leafs’ goaltender, made 38 saves and has now won five consecutive starts.

Jake McCabe, who played his 600th NHL game, was hit in the head by a shot from Tampa Bay’s Nick Perbix in the second period and did not return to the game.

In the third period, Tampa Bay’s Michael Eyssimont, Jake Guentzel, and Cam Atkinson scored goals — the last two while Tampa Bay’s goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy was pulled for an extra skater. However, Nylander sealed the win with an empty-net goal. Victor Hedman and Brandon Hagel each recorded two assists.

Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL)

Vasilevskiy made 24 saves for Tampa Bay, which finished November with a 5-6-2 record.

The Lightning played without star playmaker Nikita Kucherov, who was out with an undisclosed injury.

In a fast-paced first period, Tampa Bay controlled most of the play, but the Leafs scored on their first shot when Knies deflected Tanev’s blast for his ninth goal at 7:13.

Tanev scored his first goal of the season at 8:06, putting Toronto ahead 2-0. Robertson then made it 3-0 just 33 seconds later, scoring his second goal of the season from the left circle. It was Robertson’s first goal in 13 games.

Tavares extended the lead to 4-0, backhanding a loose puck with 1:01 left in the second period for his 10th goal.

In the third, Eyssimont scored at 11:21, and Guentzel added his 10th goal at 15:19, cutting the Lightning’s deficit to 4-2.

Hedman earned his 589th assist on Guentzel’s goal, setting a new franchise record for assists, passing Martin St. Louis.

Atkinson’s power-play goal at 17:38 made it 4-3, but Nylander scored into the empty net at 18:44 for his 15th goal to finish the game.

Lightning look to build on offensive surge against Capitals

The Tampa Bay Lightning found their rhythm on Monday night against the Colorado Avalanche and are aiming to keep their offense going when they face the Washington Capitals on Wednesday.

Lightning coach Jon Cooper had criticized his team’s tendency to overpass and try to make flashy plays during two winless games (0-1-1), but he had no complaints on Monday when Brandon Hagel was on fire. Hagel, known for his speed and scoring, set a franchise record with four assists in the first period, tying an NHL record for the most assists in the opening frame, during the Lightning’s 8-2 win over the Avalanche.

Hagel didn’t stop there, adding a fifth assist on Brayden Point’s power-play goal in the second period, giving Point his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Hagel’s five assists tied the franchise record held by Mark Recchi, Martin St. Louis, and his teammate Darren Raddysh.

The most amusing praise came from Nikita Kucherov, who jokingly asked Hagel if he was Bobby Orr after the first period. Hagel laughed it off but was happy to take the compliment.

The Lightning had a dominant performance, moving to 4-1-1 in their last six games. In the first 10 minutes of the game, Nick Perbix, Jake Guentzel, and Kucherov all scored, causing the Avalanche’s starting goalie Justus Annunen to be pulled from the game. Backup Alexandar Georgiev allowed three more goals before being replaced. Annunen returned but allowed more goals in the third period from Guentzel and Michael Eyssimont.

Washington Capitals and Columbus Blue Jackets

Tampa Bay played without Nick Paul for the third consecutive game. Cooper confirmed that Paul will be out for the rest of the week.

Meanwhile, in South Florida, the Washington Capitals showed they could still win without their star player, Alex Ovechkin, who is out with a broken leg. Goaltender Logan Thompson was excellent, making 20 saves to improve his record to 9-1-1, while Lars Eller scored twice and Jakob Chychrun had a goal and two assists to lead Washington to a 4-1 victory over the Florida Panthers, handing Florida its sixth loss in seven games.

Washington controlled the game, keeping Florida’s defense on its heels by pressuring goalie Spencer Knight and staying relentless with the puck. Chychrun scored the game-winning goal on the power play in the third period, and Washington coach Spencer Carbery was impressed with the way his team played in the final frame.

“I thought the third period was our best period by far, starting with the power play to get us the lead there,” Carbery said. “We completely locked it down and carried the majority of the play in the third. I was really proud of that third period. That’s got to be what it looks like.”

The victory was Washington’s first win in three games without Ovechkin. Wednesday’s game will be the second of six road games for the Capitals over an eight-game stretch.

Brandon Hagel records 5 assists as Lightning dominate Avalanche

Anthony Cirelli scored for the sixth game in a row, and Brandon Hagel had four of his career-high five assists during Tampa Bay’s big five-goal first period as the Lightning defeated the Colorado Avalanche 8-2 on Monday night.

Cirelli’s quick goal with just 14 seconds left in the first period extended his goal streak to six games, the longest in the NHL this season. His ninth goal of the season put the Lightning ahead 5-1. He is now two games away from tying the Tampa Bay record for the most consecutive games with a goal, a record held by Nikita Kucherov and Brian Bradley.

Hagel set a franchise record with four assists in the first period and added another assist in the second.

Jake Guentzel scored twice, Kucherov had a goal and two assists, and Nick Perbix, Luke Glendening, Brayden Point, and Michael Eyssimont also scored for Tampa Bay. The Lightning improved their home record to 7-2-1. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 23 saves in goal, and Zemgus Girgensons earned his 100th career assist.

The Lightning won both games in the season series, outscoring Colorado 13-4.

For the Avalanche, Ivan Ivan scored both of their goals in the loss. Colorado’s goaltender, Justus Annunen, was replaced in the first period after allowing three goals but later returned to play. He ended up allowing five goals on 16 shots. Alexandar Georgiev stopped 14 shots in relief.

Nathan MacKinnon
Nathan MacKinnon – Colorado Avalanche

Josh Manson played in his 600th NHL game, while Jonathan Drouin was scratched from the lineup due to an upper-body injury after scoring two goals in Saturday’s game.

In the first period, Perbix scored the game’s first goal at 5:41 with help from Eyssimont. Guentzel added another on the power play just over two minutes later, but Ivan quickly scored for Colorado on a rebound. Kucherov’s goal at the 10-minute mark chased Annunen from the game. Hagel then stripped Nathan MacKinnon of the puck during a Colorado power play and helped lead a 2-on-1 rush, which ended with Glendening scoring a short-handed goal. Cirelli then scored with just 14 seconds left in the period.

In the second period, Point scored on the power play, with an assist from Hagel, to make it 6-1.

Annunen returned to the net for the third period, and Ivan scored again for Colorado. Guentzel added another goal for the Lightning before Eyssimont scored to finish the game at 8-2.

Stanley Cup 2022: Colorado Avalanche Wins Game 6, Clinches The Series 4-2

Stanley Cup 2022 has finally come to an end, and we have a new winner. Colorado Avalanche wins the series against Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2 and takes home the cup. After two years, new champions have emerged, which is, in fact, a good thing for the sport. When Tampa Bay won the game 5 and made it 3-2 in the series, it seemed as if Tampa will be 3rd time lucky as well, but it wasn’t meant to be. But credit to Colorado. They held on to their nerves and finished off the series with one game to spare. It was tough for Colorado, though, as they were playing game 6 away and even conceded a goal early on in the match.

But champions are what champions do, they stuck to their game plan, equalized, and scored the winner thereafter. It was the lowest-scoring game in the entire series. That just shows how nervy things can be out there, all defensive. Even though the consolation prize went to Tampa, they must be applauded for their stellar performance. They tried to keep the series alive while they were 2-0 down in the beginning and then 3-1 down halfway through. They gave Colorado a run for their money and truly showed why they were two times defending champions of the Stanley Cup. Overall, a brilliant finals series with a lot of ups and downs.

This article will provide the breakdown of game 6.

Stanley Cup 2022- Game 6

Stanley Cup 2022, game 6, was intense. It started off exactly the way Tampa Bay Lightning wanted it to start. Being the home team and down in the series 2-3, Tampa took an early lead. They even looked like the better team in the first quarter and ended it with a goal advantage. Things looked really good for the Lightning, their play was fast, smooth, and in transition. To all of us, it looked like the home team was on the course forcing it to game 7. The back-to-back champions were not ready to give up yet. It was their captain, Steven Stamkos, who lead from the front, scoring the opening goal for his team. The entire stadium erupted with joy and enthusiasm. It seemed the home crowd was ready to get a great game from their team tonight.

Stanley Cup- Power Shift From Colorado

As soon as the second quarter began, Colorado Avalanche came out as a new team. They started dominating the game completely and gave no chance to Tampa Bay. They quickly equalized at the beginning of the second and scored another one towards the end of the second. They looked absolutely fearless, fast, and unstoppable. Tampa had no answers to Avalanche’s attacks. The entire stadium turned into an empty one. Nathan MacKinnon scored the first, followed by Artturi Lehkonen in the second.

The second quarter ended with Colorado in the lead and a dominant display. The third also followed the same script. The lightning did not have a single shot on target rather, Colorado did not give them any chance to perform any good. Only in the last 10 minutes did the Lightning try to do something, but it was nothing. With 2-1 the score, Colorado Avalanche managed to secure game 6 and win the series 4-2.

With this, the reign of the Tampa Bay Lightning ended, and Colorado Avalanche won their third Stanley Cup.
