Barcelona Struggle Continues As Atletico Madrid Become La Liga Table Toppers
Atletico Madrid dominated Barcelona in a 1-0 victory to become the La Liga table toppers.
The La Liga has not been too kind to Barcelona this season. The club started a new project after their humiliating 8-2 defeat against Bayern Munich in the 2019/20 UCL quarter-finals. They started off great with two amazing victories but then went on to pick only 2 points from 4 consecutive matches. However, they ended on a positive note with a 5-2 victory against Real Betis before the international break. So, it was time again for the Blaugranas to return to the league. They were going to lock heads with their topmost rivals apart from Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid. Atletico Madrid had been great this season as they had not lost a single league game till now. In fact, they were at the 2nd position even after playing 1 match less than Real Sociedad. So, they had a chance to climb back to the top now whereas Barcelona had the chance to climb up to the Top 5.
Match Summary: Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona:
The match began as Barcelona kicked off. The match was surely going to be interesting but could’ve been more if Barcelona’s former player Suarez had not tested positive during the international break. As a result, he was not playing for Atletico Madrid but it didn’t matter much because even without him, Atletico was quite strong. However, Barcelona started off great as they were maintaining the possession really well. In fact, in the 3rd minute, the Catalans also got their first chance as Dembele dribbled past Carrasco to cross in the ball for Griezmann. However, the Frenchman hit the ball just a few inches above the crossbar as he failed to score. Anyhow, the game continued and now even Atletico were creating chances. In the 5th minute, Saul smashed the ball into the left corner of the goal but Ter Stegen made a great save to deny him.
The match continued and both the teams were creating some really brilliant chances. However, neither of them was able to convert those chances. Finally, in the injury time of the first half, Carrasco broke the deadlock to score the first goal of the game. It was the 48th minute and all the Barcelona defenders had charged ahead for a corner. However, Correa cleared the ball as soon as he got it to provide an assist to Carrasco, The latter then nutmegged Ter Stegen who was way out of his box, almost near the half-line. Carrasco then took an easy shot at the goal that Sergio Roberto wasn’t able to block. As a result, Atletico Madrid had got themselves a 1 goal lead just at the end of the first half.
The second half began and Barcelona was now desperately looking to score goals. However, they were only able to create a few chances as Atletico’s defense stood strong against the Catalans. The only two close chances that Barcelona got were when Lionel Messi chipped in two assists. He crossed the ball into the box to create heading opportunities for both Griezmann and Lenglet. However, their shots were saved by Jan Oblak, the Atletico Madrid goalkeeper. Even after that Barcelona tried all they could but could not put the ball into the back of the net. As a result, the match ended as Barcelona failed to win their very first game after the international break. They had lost their 3rd game of this season. Consequently, now they only had 11 points from 3 wins and 2 draws.
With yet another loss, Barcelona fell down to the 10th position on the points table. On the other hand, Atletico Madrid climbed to become the table toppers of La Liga. Even though they have played only 8 games as compared to Real Sociedad, their partners with the same points, they became the table toppers. Anyhow, now the clubs will be preparing for UCL return as they will be playing their 4 fixture of UCL next week. Atletico Madrid will be facing Lokomotiv Moscow whereas Barcelona will be up against Dynamo Kyiv. After that, they will be returning back for league action as Barcelona will be locking heads with Osasuna while Atletico Madrid will be going up against Valencia.
