Green Bay GM Gutekunst urges Packers to increase urgency following early playoff exit in Green Bay

Green Bay Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst acknowledged that the team showed improvement over the course of the season. However, he also recognized that losing in the opening round of the playoffs wasn’t enough for a team with high expectations.

Even though Gutekunst believes the team is moving in the right direction, he challenged the players, especially since the Packers lost all six of their games this season against the top teams in the NFC, including the Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, and Minnesota Vikings.

“We need to continue to ramp up our sense of urgency,” Gutekunst said during a season-ending news conference on Thursday afternoon. “The life of a player in the National Football League is not very long. We’ve got a bunch of good guys in that locker room, we’ve got a bunch of talented guys in that locker room, and I think it’s time we started competing for championships.”

“I think they’re ready,” he added.

Green Bay’s 22-10 loss to the Eagles in the NFC wild-card round marked the end of the Packers’ season. This came after a 34-29 loss to the Eagles in their regular-season opener in São Paulo, Brazil. In between, the Packers lost twice to the Lions and twice to the Vikings, finishing third in the NFC North and securing the seventh and final playoff spot in the conference.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur has had a successful run, leading the team to a 67-33 record over six seasons (3-5 in the postseason), including trips to the NFC championship games in 2019 and 2020. However, Green Bay’s most recent Super Bowl appearance was in the 2010 season, when the Packers won the title under head coach Mike McCarthy and quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

“I think everybody’s gutted,” LaFleur said during his season wrap-up with reporters earlier in the week. “If you go out there and you play at your best and you come up short, there’s a different feeling.”

Green Bay Packers celebrates his fumble recovery during the second half

As the Packers look ahead to the offseason, they face the possibility of losing 11 players who are set to become unrestricted free agents. Among them are three starters: center Josh Myers, linebacker Isaiah McDuffie, and defensive tackle T.J. Slaton.

The team may also part ways with two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaire Alexander, who has struggled with injuries, missing 10 games in each of the past two seasons and serving a one-game suspension in 2023. Alexander did not speak to reporters during the locker clean-out day, stating he didn’t “have anything good to say.”

When asked if there was a disconnect between the organization and Alexander, Gutekunst responded, “No, no, no. I mean, there’s frustration, I think, on both sides, from the fact that he can’t get out there. I feel for him, because he wants to be out there and he wants to play. But no disconnect.”

The Packers can free up about $6 million in salary cap space if they part ways with Alexander, which would bring their total projected cap space to $57 million for the offseason (not counting the cost of signing their draft class).

After signing All-Pro safety Xavier McKinney and Pro Bowl running back Josh Jacobs last year, Gutekunst will have the financial flexibility to make more moves in free agency if he chooses. Along with the continued growth of a roster that was the youngest in the NFL for the second straight year, Gutekunst feels optimistic about the team’s future.

“The decisions we’ve made over the past few years have put us in the situation where we’re in pretty good shape,” Gutekunst said. “I feel really good about our ability to go do what we need to do to field a championship-level team.”

He added, “The opportunities that are going to be out there are unknown right now. We’ll see how that goes. But we’re in a better situation than we have been.”

Nearly a year after key coaching decisions shaped their paths, the Lions and Commanders face off in Detroit

Dan Quinn met with Adam Peters, the new general manager of the Washington Commanders, and other team officials at a hotel in Georgetown in late January 2024 to discuss their head coaching vacancy. After the meeting, Quinn was left anxious, wondering if they would call him back.

“I hope they call,” Quinn thought at the time.

On the same day, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson was supposed to interview with the Commanders, but he chose to stay with the Lions, informing Washington and other teams that he would remain in his current role. Later that week, Washington hired Quinn as their head coach and agreed with Kliff Kingsbury to take over as the offensive coordinator by February 4.

Fast forward 11 and a half months, and all of them will be on the sidelines when the Lions face the Commanders in the divisional round of the playoffs. Johnson has played a crucial role in making Detroit’s offense one of the best in the NFL, while Kingsbury has helped Washington develop a high-powered offense with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels.

All four of these coordinators have earned attention from teams looking for head coaches.

Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn, who had interviewed with Washington before Quinn got the job, is one of the most sought-after candidates right now. Glenn has spoken with the Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, Las Vegas Raiders, New Orleans Saints, and New York Jets about head coaching positions.

“Glenn is beyond qualified right now,” said Johnson, who has also interviewed with the Bears, Jaguars, and Raiders. “He is more prepared to be a head coach than maybe anybody I’ve ever met. He wants that, and I think he’d do a phenomenal job in charge.”

Veteran tight end Zach Ertz of the Commanders echoed this, saying, “Aaron Glenn is probably one of the best coaches in the league just maximizing his players.”

Johnson has also excelled in maximizing Detroit’s offense, and he now feels ready to leave Dan Campbell’s staff to run his own team. He’s been able to think more about the bigger picture and what a team he runs would look like.

“I’ve been able to have offseasons and summers to think about the big-picture view, what a program would look like where I’m running it,” Johnson explained.

Kingsbury, who has experience running a Power Five college program at Texas Tech for six years and coaching the Arizona Cardinals for four seasons, understands what it’s like to lead a team. He was recently asked if he wanted to be an NFL head coach again and responded, “at some point.”

Ben Johnson looks from the sidelines

“We’ll see how everything plays out, but I’m very happy here,” Kingsbury said. “This has been an awesome, awesome place and has really helped me kind of rekindle my love for the sport.”

It’s uncertain whether the Commanders would be in this position without the leadership from Quinn and the play-calling from Kingsbury, who has worked with quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray, and Caleb Williams at USC. Kingsbury has also been instrumental in helping Daniels develop into a favorite for the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year.

“He has meant a lot, obviously, just for my development and my growth from the day I stepped foot here to this point now,” Daniels said recently. “He wants to go out there and dominate, put us in the best position and he wants to win.”

The Commanders have also received permission from the New York Jets to talk to defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. about the possibility of replacing Robert Saleh as their head coach. Whitt said his main focus is still on the Lions and he doesn’t want to distract himself from his current job by interviewing elsewhere.

Six-time All-Pro linebacker Bobby Wagner praised Whitt’s ability to put players in the right positions to make plays.

“He’s found a way to maximize everybody’s talent,” Wagner said. “He’s a great leader, and I think that’s what helped us kind of grow throughout the season.”

Whitt may be less likely to land a head coaching role after just one season as a defensive coordinator, and Kingsbury could decide to stay with Daniels for another year before considering a head coaching job. Glenn, too, is happy with his current role in Detroit but has also started thinking about what it might be like to be an NFL head coach soon.

“If it’s an opportunity that’s best for me and my family, then we’ll take a look at it,” Glenn said. “During the season, you’re so locked into what you’re doing, and then once the interviews start, you start to think about those things, about the people you’ve talked to. You start to think, ‘Is this a guy that I feel like I can win a Super Bowl with?’ And I always look at it that way.”

Harbhajan Singh Warns of Internal Divisions in Indian Cricket, Compares to Greg Chappell Era

Harbhajan Singh has expressed concerns about the state of the Indian cricket team, drawing comparisons to the challenging period under Greg Chappell’s coaching. He highlighted internal conflicts, leaks of sensitive information, and a lack of team harmony. Harbhajan warned that such issues could impact the team’s performance and morale, stressing the importance of resolving them quickly to restore unity and focus.

Frequent Leaks and Growing Divisions Among Players

The former cricketer pointed out that in the past six to eight months, there have been numerous reports leaking internal team matters. These leaks, according to Harbhajan, fuel unnecessary drama and speculation, which distract from the team’s primary goal: performance. He criticized the blame game among players and emphasized the need for conflicts to be resolved privately within the team, without the involvement of the media or external parties.

Greg Chappel

Harbhajan drew direct parallels between the present environment and the Greg Chappell era (2006-2008). He noted that similar issues arose during Chappell’s time, including lack of player chemistry and media leaks, which led to internal strife. This toxic atmosphere, according to Harbhajan, contributed to poor performances, including India’s early exit from the 2007 ODI World Cup. He warned that if these issues are not addressed, the team could face similar setbacks.

BCCI Prepares Measures to Address Team’s Problems

Reports suggest that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is aware of the ongoing issues and has begun preparing a 10-point document to tackle disciplinary problems and improve team unity. The initiative follows growing concerns about divisions within the squad, particularly after India’s recent tour of Australia, which saw speculation about factions within the team and potential captaincy changes.

Harbhajan criticized the leaks that have plagued the team and urged the management to enforce strict confidentiality within the dressing room. He called for the players and management to resolve internal conflicts and work together as a unified team, focusing on performance rather than drama. While the BCCI’s involvement is promising, the resolution of these challenges will ultimately depend on the team’s ability to restore harmony and maintain focus.

Charlotte Dujardin Suspended for One Year Over Horse-Whipping Incident, Withdraws from Paris 2024 Olympics

Three-time Olympic equestrian gold medalist Charlotte Dujardin has been handed a one-year suspension after a horse-whipping controversy, which led to her withdrawal from the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The suspension follows an investigation into a video that surfaced from 2019, where Dujardin was seen repeatedly whipping a horse while coaching another rider. This incident raised concerns about her treatment of horses and her adherence to animal welfare standards, resulting in her temporary removal from competition.

Provisional Suspension and Legal Complaint Filed by Dutch Lawyer

The International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) imposed a provisional suspension on Dujardin on July 23, 2023. This suspension came as the FEI initiated a formal investigation into the horse-whipping video.

The complaint was filed by Dutch equine lawyer Stephan Wensing on behalf of an unnamed client, who raised alarm over Dujardin’s behavior in the video. The governing body took swift action to investigate the matter, prioritizing the protection and welfare of the horses involved in equestrian sports.

FEI’s Sanctions: Fine Imposed Alongside Suspension

Following its investigation, the FEI announced a one-year suspension for Dujardin, which will remain in effect until July 2024. Additionally, the rider was fined 10,000 Swiss francs (approximately $11,300) for her actions.

Despite the severity of the sanctions, Dujardin accepted the ruling and confirmed she would not appeal. The FEI’s investigation concluded that the video represented an isolated incident, with no other instances of abuse linked to Dujardin during her career.

Charlotte Dujardin has a decorated Olympic career, having won multiple gold medals in dressage. She earned individual and team gold at the London 2012 Olympics and another individual gold at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

In addition, she won team and individual bronze medals at the Tokyo 2020 Games, as well as a silver in Rio’s team event. Although her suspension has cast a shadow on her achievements, Dujardin remains one of the most accomplished equestrians in the history of the sport.

Sofi Martinez Denies Lionel Messi Romance Rumors, Cites Gender Bias and Emotional Toll

Argentinian sports presenter Sofi Martinez has strongly rejected rumors suggesting she is romantically involved with football icon Lionel Messi. The rumors gained traction after her public interactions with Messi, particularly during her emotional interview with him after Argentina’s victory in the 2022 World Cup. Despite the speculation, Martinez has described these claims as “ridiculous,” pointing out that they are baseless and have no merit.

Martinez revealed the personal toll that the rumors have taken on her and her family. In an interview on the Argentinian talk show “PH: Podemos Hablar,” the sports journalist shared how the growing speculation has been emotionally painful. She explained that with increased visibility, she had become a target of unfounded gossip, which not only hurt her personally but also caused distress within her family. Martinez also mentioned how certain fan theories, such as claims about flirtatious glances exchanged between her and Messi, made her feel embarrassed.

One of the key points Martinez highlighted was the role of gender in fueling such rumors. She argued that her interactions with Messi, which were professional in nature, were unfairly scrutinized due to her being a woman. Martinez pointed out that if a male journalist had the same interactions, there would be no such speculation. This comment underscored how women in the public eye are often subjected to unnecessary rumors and assumptions based on their gender.

Messi and Antonela’s Relationship

While rumors about her connection to Messi persisted, neither the football star nor his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo, have commented on the situation. Speculation has also arisen over Antonela’s supposed jealousy regarding Messi’s work relationship with Martinez. However, Martinez has dismissed these claims, asserting that she shares a respectful bond with Antonela. In fact, she has praised Antonela for her ability to handle the constant media attention that comes with being married to a global sports icon.

In terms of her personal life, Martinez recently confirmed her single status following her breakup with journalist Diego Leuco at the end of 2023. This led to further rumors linking her to TV personality Marcos Ginocchio, though Martinez clarified that these speculations were not true. She emphasized that she is focused on her career and clarified that any claims of a relationship with Messi are purely fabricated, reiterating that their interactions have been strictly professional.

Maverick Carter Advises $5B Plan for New Basketball League in Los Angeles

Maverick Carter, LeBron James’ business manager, has been brought in as an adviser by a group of investors who are working to raise $5 billion to create an international basketball league that aims to compete with the NBA, sources told ESPN. This story was first reported by Bloomberg on Thursday.

The group, which includes several private equity funds, plans to form a league with six men’s teams and six women’s teams. The games will be played around the world, according to sources.

Although Carter is closely connected to LeBron James, who is a prominent figure in the sports world, sources confirmed that James is not involved in the creation of this new league. While James has not taken part in this project, he has previously shown interest in becoming an NBA team owner after he finishes his playing career. His current Lakers contract includes a player option for the 2025-26 season.

Carter, who has also worked as a producer on several of James’ TV and film projects, is said to be advising the investment group as they attempt to raise the $5 billion needed.

LeBron James reacts after missing in the 1st half

The group is reportedly planning to approach private equity funds and sovereign wealth funds for the money. Currently, private equity funds are limited to holding no more than 20% of an NBA team and cannot have governing roles.

The NBA has not faced a major rival in the 5-on-5 basketball league format since the 1970s. Back then, it merged with the American Basketball Association, which had a short life but included teams such as the Pacers, Nets, Nuggets, and Spurs. In the 1990s, the WNBA faced competition from the American Basketball League, though that league only lasted two and a half seasons before folding.

This season, a new 3-on-3 women’s basketball league called Unrivaled has started, attracting many big WNBA stars. However, rookie sensation Caitlin Clark chose not to participate in the league.

Dolphins to Play in NFL’s First-Ever Game in Madrid

The Miami Dolphins will play in the NFL’s first-ever regular-season game in Spain, set to take place next season at Madrid’s iconic Bernabéu Stadium, the league announced on Friday.

The Dolphins will be the “home” team at the stadium, which is known for its retractable soccer pitch that makes space for an American football field. The venue has a seating capacity of over 78,000.

“We are thrilled to play the NFL’s inaugural game in Spain, a country with a rich history, tradition, and passion, and home to a vibrant Dolphins fanbase,” said Tom Garfinkel, the Dolphins’ vice chairman, president, and CEO.

The specific date for the game and Miami’s opponent will be revealed in the spring.

The Dolphins and the Chicago Bears hold marketing rights in Spain as part of the NFL’s global markets program. This program lets teams host events and sign commercial deals in international locations.

“The exciting first-ever game in Spain highlights the NFL’s ongoing commitment to expanding its global presence and reaching new audiences worldwide,” said Brett Gosper, the NFL’s head of Europe and APAC.

Miami missed the playoffs this season, finishing with an 8-9 record.

The Dolphins have a 2-5 record in games played outside the United States and have lost their last four international games. Their most recent loss was in Frankfurt, Germany, in 2023, when they fell 21-14 to the Kansas City Chiefs. Miami has previously played five games in London and one in Toronto.

Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle in the 1st half

Miami’s 2025 home schedule will feature games against AFC East rivals, including the Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots, and New York Jets. The Dolphins will also host the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Chargers, and Washington Commanders.

The NFL has been working to expand its global reach, hoping to attract new fans and generate additional revenue. Partnering with one of the world’s most successful soccer teams, Real Madrid, is seen as a significant move in this effort.

“This partnership with the NFL will bring one of the world’s most prestigious sporting events to the Santiago Bernabéu, a stadium that has welcomed millions of passionate fans from around the world for unforgettable sporting experiences,” said Emilio Butragueño, the institutional relations director of Real Madrid.

Bernabéu, located in the heart of Madrid, is also being considered as a candidate to host the final of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

As of the 2025 season, the NFL will be able to schedule up to eight regular-season games internationally.

Next season, London will host three games—two at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and one at Wembley Stadium. The Jets and Cleveland Browns will be the home teams at Tottenham, while the Jacksonville Jaguars will be at Wembley.

Berlin will host its first-ever regular-season game with the Indianapolis Colts as the home team at Olympic Stadium.

In September, the Philadelphia Eagles defeated the Green Bay Packers 34-29 in São Paulo, Brazil, marking the NFL’s first game in South America.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in October that Rio de Janeiro could also host a game soon, adding that there’s “no doubt” Ireland will get one in the near future. The league has also expressed interest in Australia as a potential future host.

Seattle Storm Face Investigation Into Alleged Player Mistreatment Amid Coaching and Roster Uncertainty

The Seattle Storm are currently under investigation for alleged mistreatment of players by their coaching staff, as confirmed by sources to ESPN. The organization has enlisted a law firm to investigate accusations of harassment and bullying related to player performance. These allegations have raised concerns within the team about the behavior of the coaches towards the players throughout the season.

Noelle Quinn’s Role and Coaching Staff

Noelle Quinn, who completed her fourth season as head coach of the Storm, is at the center of the investigation. Quinn, a former WNBA player, took over as head coach in early 2021 after the retirement of Dan Hughes. The coaching staff under her leadership included Ebony Hoffman, a former WNBA player, Pokey Chatman, a veteran coach, and Perry Huang, who recently left the team to join the Los Angeles Lakers’ G League staff. Despite the strong coaching staff, the team is facing serious scrutiny over the allegations.

Seattle Storm Face Investigation Into Alleged Player Mistreatment Amid Coaching and Roster Uncertainty

The Storm had a strong regular season, finishing with a 25-15 record, but were swept by the Las Vegas Aces in the first round of the playoffs. Coach Quinn expressed her disappointment with the team’s effort at various points during the season, including after the playoff loss. She publicly vowed to improve both her performance and the team’s effort moving forward, emphasizing that effort would no longer be a concern for the organization.

Struggles and Roster Changes in Recent Years

The Storm have faced challenges in recent seasons, particularly after the retirement of franchise legend Sue Bird in 2022 and the departure of two-time champion Breanna Stewart for New York. In 2023, the team had a difficult year, finishing with an 11-29 record, though Jewell Loyd led the league in scoring. However, with the addition of veteran free agents Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins-Smith in 2024, the team saw a significant improvement, as five players averaged double-digit points per game.

As the team looks ahead to the 2025 season, there is some uncertainty regarding the roster. While Jewell Loyd and Skylar Diggins-Smith are both signed for the upcoming season, Nneka Ogwumike is a free agent. Additionally, the ongoing investigation into the coaching staff could have significant consequences for the future of the organization. The outcome of this investigation may influence the team’s leadership and its approach both on and off the court.

Broncos Part Ways with Special Teams Coach Ben Kotwica, Sources Confirm in Denver

Just two days after Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton said he would start evaluating what changes needed to be made in the offseason, he made his first move with his coaching staff.

Sources confirmed on Friday morning that Payton has fired special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica. Kotwica was hired by Payton last year, along with Mike Westhoff, to manage the special teams unit. Westhoff, who had worked with Kotwica before with the New York Jets, retired earlier this year due to health concerns.

Special teams assistant Chris Banjo, who had played for Payton with the New Orleans Saints, will stay on the coaching staff.

The Broncos (10-8) led the league in punt returns this season with an average of 15.7 yards per return. Marvin Mims Jr. earned an All-Pro selection as a returner, and kicker Wil Lutz tied Jason Elam for the franchise’s single-season field goal record with 31 successful attempts.

However, in addition to Westhoff’s retirement, two major special teams mistakes stood out, especially in crucial AFC West losses, which overshadowed the Broncos’ special teams performance.

The first was a blocked field goal in a game against the Kansas City Chiefs on November 10. The Broncos were trailing 16-14 with time running out when the Chiefs blocked a 35-yard field goal attempt by Lutz. The Chiefs had previously found a weakness in the Broncos’ line and overloaded the left side.

Denver Broncos running backs, from left, Samaje Perine, Tyler Badie and Javonte Williams take part in drills during NFL football practice

Several Kansas City defenders managed to push Alex Forsyth over, allowing linebacker Leo Chenal to block the kick, which ultimately preserved the Chiefs’ win at Arrowhead Stadium.

The day after the game, Payton addressed the mistake and said, “This isn’t on one player … this is on all of us. This is on us as coaches.” The Broncos made adjustments to their formation, swapping Forsyth with reserve tackle Matt Peart, and Lutz went on to make 41 of his next 42 field-goal and extra-point attempts. Lutz did miss a 50-yard field goal in the Wild Card loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The second significant special teams error came in the Broncos’ December 19 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Near the end of the first half, cornerback Tremon Smith was called for fair-catch interference after he bumped into Chargers punt returner Derius Davis.

As a result of the penalty, the Chargers were given a free kick, and Los Angeles kicker Cameron Dicker made a 57-yard field goal to end the half. The kick cut the Broncos’ lead to 21-13, and the Chargers gained momentum, eventually winning the game 34-27.

Kotwica, who served in the Army and flew helicopters during missions in Iraq, Bosnia, and Korea, has been an NFL coach for 17 seasons.

Sedriques Dumas Overcomes Legal Controversy to Focus on UFC Career and Redemption

Sedriques Dumas, a promising MMA fighter, has shown exceptional talent in the octagon, amassing a professional record of 10-2-0. His journey includes notable wins in the UFC, most recently defeating Denis Tiuliulin in a middleweight bout.

This victory highlighted his resilience and ability to perform under pressure. However, his career faced a significant challenge when he became embroiled in legal troubles shortly before one of his fights, drawing attention away from his athletic accomplishments.

Legal Issues and Controversial History Surround Fighter’s Domestic Violence Case

In February 2024, Dumas was arrested in Escambia County, Florida, on charges of felony battery related to allegations of domestic violence. The case drew widespread attention due to the severity of the accusations and Dumas’ rising profile in the MMA world. The charges were later downgraded to a misdemeanor, with allegations that he had struck and scratched the mother of his child. Police evidence included a text message in which Dumas allegedly admitted to the act. Despite this, he pleaded not guilty during the trial, which added to the complexity and public scrutiny surrounding the case.

Sedriques Dumas
Sedriques Dumas (UFC)

Dumas’ legal challenges extended beyond this incident. Since 2014, he has faced a history of arrests, including similar charges and a conviction for felony possession. In a prior case, he was accused of assaulting a woman but was not arrested. These details resurfaced during the domestic violence case, painting a controversial picture of the fighter’s history. Dumas defended himself publicly, denying the recent allegations and stating that he was not in a relationship with the complainant at the time of the incident.

Legal Resolution and Dismissal of Charges

In June 2024, the domestic violence charge against Dumas was formally dismissed by state prosecutors through a nolle prosequi, ending the case without further prosecution. This resolution followed Dumas’ not-guilty plea and brought a sense of vindication to the fighter. After the dismissal, Dumas celebrated on social media, expressing gratitude to his legal team and faith, while criticizing those who labeled him negatively during the ordeal. Despite the legal victory, questions about the decision to drop the charges and the impact on his reputation linger.

With the charges behind him, Dumas has returned to his UFC career, competing in two fights in 2024. However, the incident remains a polarizing aspect of his journey, dividing opinions among fans and the MMA community. While some view the dismissal as a fresh start for the fighter, others believe his past continues to overshadow his achievements. Dumas’ ability to focus on his career and navigate public perception will determine how this chapter shapes his future in the sport.

Rory McIlroy Criticizes Potential Ryder Cup Payment Shift in Dubai

Rory McIlroy has said he would be willing to pay to play in the Ryder Cup after it was revealed that members of the U.S. team could earn $400,000 (£315,000) each for their participation in next year’s event in New York. McIlroy feels that offering money to players could harm the “purity” of the competition, which is traditionally seen as an event driven by passion and national pride, not financial incentives.

Under pressure from top players, the PGA of America is considering breaking tradition by paying the 12 U.S. team members from a $5 million fund. However, no such plan is being discussed for the European team, and McIlroy, one of Europe’s top players, is fully in favor of this stance.

“I personally would pay for the privilege to play in the Ryder Cup,” McIlroy said. “I’ve come a long way in this, especially with the Olympics, but the two purest forms of competition in our game right now are the Ryder Cup and Olympics, partly because no money is involved.”

McIlroy acknowledges that the Ryder Cup generates significant revenue and understands the argument for compensating players, but he insists that the essence of the event is not about money. He said, “It’s one of the top five biggest sporting events in the world, so I get the argument that the talent could be getting paid.” However, McIlroy emphasizes that the Ryder Cup holds greater value, especially for Europeans, due to its deep connection with the sport’s tradition and identity.

“The Ryder Cup is so much more than that, especially to the Europeans and this tour,” McIlroy explained. “We’ve all had a conversation about it with Luke [Donald, the European captain], because we obviously heard [about the Americans], and the common consensus is that the $5 million paid to the team would be better spent on the DP World Tour to support other events and even the Challenge Tour.

For us, it would give the event a different feel. What we’ve done very well over the last decade is maintain a cohesive group, and we wouldn’t want anything to change that.”

Rory McIlroy of the PGA Tour talks before The Showdown

Though McIlroy understands the reasoning behind the payment to U.S. players, he questions whether it’s really necessary. “I don’t think any of the 24 players on either team needs the $400,000,” McIlroy stated. “Every two years, we play and there are 104 weeks between the events, and for 103 of them, you can play golf and get paid. That seems reasonable enough.”

McIlroy added, “If you go back to the purity aspect, paying the players would make the competition seem a little less pure. But it wouldn’t change anything from a European perspective. We would all welcome the money if it didn’t change the dynamic of what we have, but I think it would change the dynamic.”

The Ryder Cup, which will take place at Bethpage in New York next September, has already faced criticism due to high ticket prices, with some tickets costing $750 per day. McIlroy admits that this issue will bring a new layer to the conversation, especially now that players might benefit from the event’s growing revenue.

“It makes us look very unrelatable to the average person on the street because of how much money is being pumped into the game,” McIlroy said. “But at the same time, that’s not our fault. There are people willing to pay what they are willing to pay, and we are fortunate to be in the right place at the right time.”

McIlroy also acknowledged that there are two sides to the issue. “I’m not criticizing at all because if the Ryder Cup generates $100-200 million in revenue, you would think the talent should get a piece of that,” he said.

“That’s not the way it has been, and as Europeans, we don’t want to change because of how good it has been the last few years. But it’s reasonable that if you put on an event that generates so much revenue, some of it should go back to the talent. That hasn’t been the case with the Ryder Cup, and that would be a massive change.”

McIlroy made these comments in Dubai, where he shot a 67 to tie for the lead with Tyrrell Hatton after the first round of the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.
